Sprint Hero HAS BEEN ROOTED@!

you have to unroot then re-root your phone. check the forums at xda. best way is to be running a custom rom and you can just intall over the one you currently have. freshlyill has already put one out with the MR update

That's interesting. I don't doubt you, but I was NOT running a customer ROM, the phone was rooted and the install would NOT install. I tried several times.

Same with me.. I was rooted with the stock rom - the MR update kept failing.. I ended up flashing the fresh .4 rom that included the mr update since it had all the apps already removed and whatnot.. worked fine for me. This way I didn't have to flash the stock ruu and reset my phone to get the update..

If you rooted and did nothing else (such as install a new recovery image, delete stock apps, etc.) the phone would update.

If you deleted stock apps and restored them, the phone would update (my wife's).

If you flashed a new recovery image the phone will NOT update (mine.) I had to RUU it first.

I have successfully rooted my phone. I am trying to download the recovery image but it will not unzip successful. It keeps giving me an error. How do I get a recovery image??? How do I move apps from the internal memory to the sd card?

Update:

I found out that the file is an image file and not a zip file. Got my phone rooted all the way now. Removed the Nascar, Stock, Amazon, and some other apps/widgets. Phone feels a little faster. What will a custom rom do for my phone performance and usage wise?

so im rooted n im trying to use this bluetooth transfer app but the app keeps telling me the since i dont have root access i cant connect to anything but a android phone. wat do i do?????

I need some clarification. I have a un rooted sprint hero that has the OTA firmware applied. Once ive run the ruu and rooted the phone can i do the OTA update and have the update and root working?

All I want to do ATM is to be able to use the nandroid backup feature weekley and be able to restore it if needed. I also want to have the ota update and have the sense UI working aswell as sprint navi until the hero gets 2.0 and google navi.

I have my phone rooted after the MR update. Im using Fresh .6 Rom. It basically removes most of the stock apps except Sprint navigation.

The act of rooting your phone should not do anything to affect the current OTA update. However installing anything (including any new recovery flash tool) will cause any checksums of those files to fail and thereby stop the OTA update.

So if you are rooting for a reason (such as to install one of the modified images, delete pre-installed system apps, new recovery tool, etc.) then you are at the mercy of those developers when a new update comes out.

Otherwise you will have to restore your device back to its original state (losing anything stored on the phone itself if you use RUU) in order to update.

I haven't seen any "stock" recovery tool that you can reflash to make your phone look pristine if you have flashed a new recovery tool.

I also wouldn't put it past Sprint to check for a rooted phone in the future before allowing an OTA update to work (which would basically force you to use an RUU to wipe your device clean.)

I'm not saying your shouldn't root your phone, I'm just saying don't expect "factory" updates to work once you do.

What are the current ROM choices for the Sprint Hero? I'm tempted to give this a shot, but the only one anybody has mentioned in this thread is the one by MoDaCo.

There's a good one that is constantly getting updated called "FRESH". You can get it on the XDA Forums... or just google sprint cdma hero FRESH Custom Rom. (Just don't get the 6b version that's up right now...it's a weird blue theme).

hope that helps!

I actually like the "Fresh Water" theme of Fresh 0.6b. I like the Fresh rom better everyday. My phone is hella-faster too. Almost zero lag. I'm happy I took the risk and rooted my phone.:D

I have a few questions:

1. i recently got a sprint htc hero with the firmware upgrade (build: 1.56.651.2 CL85027). the phone is fairly quick but i

Edit: Started working on this prior to previous post. Will leave here in case anybody needs it.

Let's test.

Running Command Prompt:

Windows XP: Select Start or Tap the Windows Key on your Keyboard, select "Run" and type "CMD" then hit "Enter".

Windows Vista/7: Select Start or Tap the Windows Key on your Keyboard, select the search box on the left and type "cmd" then hit "Enter".

Code:
Copy paste into command prompt: cd C:\android-sdk-windows-1.1_r1\tools <-- Tap Enter

You should be at:

C:\android-sdk-windows-1.1_r1\tools> <run your adb command here>
Ok, now that you know how to initiate an adb command let's try one shall we?

First time poster, long time reader. First off, HI!
I attempted this today, only to be stomped into the dirt by this. I hit a brick wall....er... maybe shouldn't use the B word here..lol.

I was stopped here anywho...

I got to the comm prompt, and did the first part
(Code: Copy paste into command prompt: cd C:\android-sdk-windows-1.1_r1\tools <-- Tap Enter )

But I got this message...

C:\Documents and Settings\aderks>C:\anderoid-sdk-windows-1.1_r1> adb shell

ok seriously, this is starting to tick me off lol.

I'm rooted. I know I am but I can't boot into recovery mode. It just freezes at the HTC logo. I've done it over and over again. Downloading all the necessary files from different sources, uninstalling HTC Sync, you name it.

It still stops at the HTC logo. Seriously, what the hell?

Did you flash the new recovery image? I found those steps in a seperate thread on XDA here:

How to root the CDMA Hero - xda-developers

Seriously, No answers. Am I doing something wrong? I followed everything to a T.

Has it got somethign to do with being on a work computer?

yes i did. I did everything to the letter, a few different threads just to be sure, different download sources, different methods (flashrec) and it still will not reboot in recovery

ridiculous

I had the exact same problem. I was up all night trying to resolve it, I just couldn't go to bed till I fixed it.

I tried everything using the directions on both my desktop and laptop computers. It would root the phone just fine everytime, but every time I typed reboot recovery after flash_image recovery recovery-RA-heroc-v1.2.3.img it would just stay on the HTC screen.

I finally decided to hard reset the phone and uninstall all the HTC drivers and sync files from my laptop. After all the drivers were removed, I tried the directions again and it finally worked where I could boot into recovery mode and do a backup.

Once I had everything on my Hero completed, I reinstalled the HTC driver and sync.

Everything is working correctly now.

Here's where we differ.. I did the factory reset and uninstalled all drivers and sync files from my laptop. I tried it again and hit the same brick wall again. I'm starting to think my Hero is faulty lol

I'm VERY interested in trying to Root my phone as some of the apps I've paid for have some major updates that will not run on 1.5...:(

However, I'm not sure of doing this due to any associated risks and the level of those risks.

I've read through the first few pages of this thread and seen where people say it's super easy...but it seems that whenever I take on tasks like that, it never goes as planned...lol

My question is this: has anyone had problems with this to the point that it's borked their phone beyond repair?

I'd like to know that I'm able to back up my current phone 'image' with all of the data, etc. that's on it and not loose any of that.

I'd like to be able to be able to essentially put all of my current apps back on the phone with all of their data once my phone is running 2.0.

Has anyone not been successful and ended up with a paperweight of a phone after trying this?

Thanks in advance!

JDuc,

I just popped in and caught your post, I haven't reviewed one prior. I am not sure what ROM you want to flash to but I was like you three days ago, I am pretty "tech savvy" and have always toyed with my device be it a BB, Winmo or other.

The rooting and rom seemed a tad bit scary to me as well. Anyhow, I personally chose to use the Fresh 1.0 Rom.

I found some really simple instructions (best I could locate) and their are hundreds of guides, literally. I sat down, gave myself a three hour window and went to work. 30 mins later I was rooted on a custom rom and it is phenomenal.

Just peruse some guides, read them over and over until you can understand the "theory" of what it is you're about to do, take a breath and then follow step by step. It's really not tough once you begin.

The only decision you'll need to make is what Rom you want to use, MaDoCo is popular but has a lot of extra stuff I didn't want. Fresh is basically the Sprint Rom with released MR included, minus the added Sprint Stock apps. it runs flawlessly. Each Rom on the developers home page will outline whether you must erase device prior to installation and whether it will preserve your data upon installation. Fresh didn't harm a thing.

Plus, if you're worried then do this: Download "My Backup (trial)" in market, it will back up data and apps and will restore data and apps as long as it's the same device.

After Rooting, you will do what's called a "Nandroid Backup" and this copies your phone's pre-existing state in the case you need to revert back. I have yet to come across anyone who permanantly ruined their phone, but I think devs must warn of the possibility.

these are the instructions I used:
Geek For Me – Fresh ROM for Android CDMA Hero Blog Archive How to: Root the CDMA HTC Sprint Hero

This is the Rom I Used:
Geek For Me – Fresh ROM for Android CDMA Hero Blog Archive Download: Fresh ROM 1.0!

Good luck if you take the leap of faith.

Thanks for the reply. I just compiled a list of threads and how to's and emailed them to my self from work (did it while at work today since it was a bit slow) and am actually really thinking about giving this a go tomorrow.

Though, it looks like I may go buy a new memory card. I have a spare 2 GB card, and an 8 GB in there, but I can always use a bigger one anyways..especially if I can now USE it..lol
