Sprint Hero HAS BEEN ROOTED@!

Ahh, ok - so with that error, I think you need to install the PDANet application. Your computer isn't seeing your phone correctly. Initially, I ran into the same issue. Even if you have HTC Sync installed, it's still not enough, at least it wasn't in my case.

Well I installed the drivers I am assuming they are right because when the hero is connected to the PC it ask me to connect to PDAnet. However when I run the first command it says "the system cannot find the path specified". This is sad I, don't have a clue as to what I need to do.
 
Can someone please tell me why I get an error no matter how I try and remove the recovery img from winzip? everything else works fine till I get to that step. I can't get the img.

If you're talking about step 3, you don't extract the image to the folder, just copy it to the folder.
 
I been reading about rooting the htc hero for the past few days...I want to do it, but I'm scared i might mess it up! lol
 
There's really no way to mess it up...you create a back up image to restore to if something goes wrong.
 
well I don't know the commands i need to use in order to remove some of the applications that came with the phone..
 
there's an entire thread that directs you on how to do that...have you followed the directions in that thread yet?
 
how many of you kept Sprint TV on their phone? should i remove it?

anyhow, i removed it. Ever since removing a bunch of useless apps from my phone, my hero been responding better, no lags and what so ever.

Another thing I want to know is, when rooting your phone and sprint gives you a new update for the OS. Wouldn't that update all the apps again or the update wouldn't go through all the way?

So I've read through this forum and although it seems full of information on how to root your phone, I have one question - why?

What is the purpose/advantage to rooting your phone? Granted, I would like to remove some of the sprint applications that came with my phone that I never use (sprint tv, NFL and twitter) but from what I've read this is possible without rooting your phone, correct?

Can someone give me an explanation why this is so great? From what I've read HTC Hero users will be receiving a software upgrade to android 2.0 very soon.
 
The Rom didn't wipe anything on my phone. It just got rid of some of that sprint trash. It gave me app to sd. A lot faster phone. I used the one click method by looking at videos from unlockr and xda sites. I decided to go with the new Gumbo Rom by gbhil @ Android Central Forum. Now I'm cookin with Gumbo and my hero is humming. No force closures or errors.

This is a wonderful thread - and my apology if I've missed this question here or anywhere else.

Regarding 'rooted' Hero (or any other Android) phones, once they're rooted, can you set a root password? ('passwd' command after issuing 'su' command)

It would seem to me that leaving the superuser unprotected, with escalated execution privileges NOT protected, then downloading/installing a maliciously written application could become an issue. I'd hate to see thousands (millions?) of Android phones become disabled, DOS attack points or spamming mailer daemons. :eek:

Just trying to make an educated decision before rooting. :)
 
n0gik...i posted your question in the xda-developers - Powered by vBulletin forum, they can give you a better answer there, but it did cross my mind when i rooted my phone "what if rooting is giving someone access to my phone and what can hackers do if they know my phone is rooted?" ...
 
I'm now confused... I thought I knew what was going on.

How do you know what recovery image to use?

Hero-Recovery-v1.2.2.img is stated in this thread yet on XDA's site shows: roc-v1.5.2.img

Just wondering which one to use ??

Simple question after i root the Hero can i go back to the original ROM if so how?

Since word is that the official update will be coming feb-march, europe getting 2.1 in feb.

Using nandroid backup. Make a nandroid backup before making any changes (after rooting of course), and then should you decide to go back, you can simply load that backup.
