Root Sprint issued update ZV9 to ZVF !?

Hey I just got an update alert from sprint to go from zv9 to zvf. Has something to do with push to talk features for new phones and service. If I knew how to grab a scree shot I would. It say reboot to install, so should I being rooted and all?

It will probably break your root. Idk if it does. But you can reroot using the Poot Apk app. :] So just install it and run Poot again if thats what you used originally.

so my main questions are, as i already know it will break root which isnt a problem just use poot.apk as stated, will i loose cwm with update and will my oc kernel still work as it was made with the zv9 boot.img originally?

EDIT:
Answered my own question there. went and did a nandroid backup then tried to install the update, but it reboots right into cwm and when i reboot from there the update vanished and still on zv9 so the answer is unless custom recovery is removed and you are running stock recovery nothing will happen, so just click reboot and install then reboot again to remove annoying update reminder

I actually want the update, I also encountered bryont's issue above. What do I need to do to receive the update? Or, now that I have tried to install it once, is my opportunity passed?

i will upload the files shortly. will have too use the unbricking method thread too install it. you will lose all root and custom recovery

Absolutely correct that is how i had to go about getting the update myself here is a link to the unbricking info just follow info exactly it WILL reset phone to default OOB settings then follow link for CWM recovery which also has rooting info and you will have zvf with root also for sprint users i will include Giantpune's oc kernel (just flash through CWM) also recomend doing a titanium backup of all apps but when restoring only restore user apps not system as it may mess up the update since all systems files will be ZV9

First step is resetting phone to default here is link for that: RESET PHONE
Next root and CWM here is link for that: CWM AND ROOT
Finally here is a link to the OC Kernel from Giantpune (SPRINT): KERNEL

and the link to the source code for the created kernel as required: HERE

Only credit i take from this is bringing the links together in one place and i assisted with the initial upload of kernel source for Giantpune to do his magic.

hope this information is useful

very nice i didnt even realize it was your post i linked to but i do appreciate the update for zvf will add to my rooting files.

If you only renamed the install-recovery.sh file to install-recovery.sh.bak then you might be able to rename it back to the original and it MIGHT reinstall the stock recovery after rebooting a few times. Maybe then you can install the update. You can go to Settings. About Phone, and go to Software updates and try it then. After the update installs check if your still overclocked, and if not, reflash the kernel to check if it still works as well. Idk if it will due to it being for a different firmware. But then you can pull the original boot from a nandroid and have someone add the overclock and stuff tp it. And you should be able to install CWM again as well. :]

and for those people like me who didn't do that or may not have known to do that step, i provided all the links needed to get the update and still achieve root custom recovery again and yes the oc kernel does still work as i am using it right now on ZVF.

I've gotten the update notification for my Sprint elite 3x now. Every single one has failed. The phone says the update downloaded and is verified. When I reboot it attempts to extract and gives me an error. My phone is rooted but I have not installed a different ROM. The file /sdcard/update.zip did not seem to exist before or after I rebooted when I looked for it in solid explorer. So on one hand I have the system update saying it was downloaded and verified, but I don't see it anywhere.

Any ideas?

I see "Incremental Package LS696ZV9" Is that supposed to be the update, or is it trying to install what you already have? The actual update shouldn't be on the sd card. It's stored in /cache you need a root permissions file explorer, go to the root directory and go to /cache and it SHOULD be in there. If it is, but it isn't working; Delete it. Then go back to your settings, go to about phone, and software updates, and update LG Software, and that should pop the message back up to install/download it. So as I am seeing then as well; Did you have the stock recovery from the start? Or did you go back to it?

Thanks for the reply. I believe that's the update. LS696ZV9 is my current version, but it's followed by ZVF in the filename which is the name of the updated firmware.

The update file was in the cache folder and I deleted it. I tried to update and my phone said there was none available. I guess I'll need to wait for the update wave to cycle back around to me again. I had stock recovery from the start.

You went into the settings, about phone, and software update and it didn't come up? Did it say you were up to date then?

Well, it's a firmware update which my phone says not available. After the first time it failed I tried to update via the settings menu with the same result. I posted in my carrier's support forum and was that I'd have to wait until the wave updates came back around to me and others who still weren't updated. Since then I've gotten the update notification, which failed, twice. Hopefully deleting and redownloading that file will help for the fourth time.

I cannot find that cache folder... and I get the same exact message in this thread. Can you post the path so I can see if I have the update file as well?
Thanks!

You'll need to be rooted and use a file explorer like ES or solid explorer that let you browse the system root. The folder is just /cache/.

Thanks -
The second or third time I got that error, I ended up factory resetting. (per recovery) So I'm now unrooted and unable to upgrade to ZVF. I think I'll follow the unbrick sticky method for now and see if I can get things sorted that way.

Best,
R.
