Root [Sprint] OTA Update L300VPBND4

You must currently be on MC1 and have the stock apps installed for this update to work. I've remove the ro.secure check so rooted users can install this and I've removed the updater for the recovery partition so you don't lose your TWRP/ClockworkMod/etc install. If anyone needs a version with the stock apps check removed as well, let me know. If there's enough interest, I'll make one and post that as well.

I am not looking forward to having to redo my mods for this update, so I'm holding off on updating. I totally blanked but what's the way to turn off the update notification?
 
I've searched "L300VPBND4", but have no idea what this does? (I foolishly hoped when I saw the update that Samsung decided to support an Android update for our device since they seemed to abandon it after well under two years. *sigh* Back to dreaming...)
 
For Christ's sake, how can you disable the pop up for this update if you have Sprintorious installed? I'm getting it about every 10-15 minutes.
 
Ok, the nagging is getting to me as well. I'd actually like to update and see if the phone works any better (I know it's mostly a roaming update, but perhaps the volume bug was accidentally addressed in the same code). But I'm afraid I'll lose root with the update, and I really need that.

So what are my options? How can I get the benefits of the update and keep root? Is it even possible?

It looks like the update won't apply if you have Sprintorious installed. When I hit "Install Now" the phone reboots into recovery and does nothing. Doing that does make the update popup go away for a while though.

That I understand. Its not Sprintorious but rather the custom recovery that is preventing it from installing. I have a stock rooted rom that exhibits the same behavior. Unless you return the recovery to stock, it won't install that way.

When you try to install it, I think it pulls the file out of the temporary storage it was sitting it waiting to install, then gets erased (freeing up that memory) when it fails to.

I noticed that my gallery app was complaining about running out of memory around when the nagging windows starting popping up. I let it attempt (in vain) to install, and the nagging went away as well as the low memory error. However, I know it will download in the background again and repeat this process soon enough. I would really like it to stop.

Unfortunately, that's about as much as I understand here. I don't know how to make it actually stop downloading, or how to install it without losing root and custom recovery. I'm not sure I can re-root or install another recovery on top of it.
 
Yes you can re root and install twrp the exact same way you did before. Or even easier, you can root with towelroot. Just install towelroot app, run it then get SuperSU from play store and install that. Easy peasy. Then for twrp just get flashify from play store, it flashes recovery.img for you. No PC needed.

After the update, can I swap the phone internal memory with microSD storage like what Sprintorious is doing? If so, do you know how to do that? Thanks.

You sure can. As long as you're rooted you can use this app to do it https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.codlab.int2ext
This app creates the same script to swap internal and external that Jerry used in sprintorious. But jerryscript modified it so you could have external 2 internal and link2sd together.

Ok madbat, so what's the best way for me to do this, preferably without losing all my information?

I have so many uncertainties here- I'm running a stock rom that has been rooted, TWRP installed and using links2SD to move as much off-internal as possible without performing a complete memory swap. I also have certain native Samsung apps disabled using either links2SD or Titanium Backup (I can't remember which I used, I think they both support "hiding" apps that you can't remove from the rom).

In order to apply this update, do I need to first return to stock (as in, unrooted and stock recovery)? What will happen to my links2SD apps? Won't it kill them? Will I need to apply a factory reset (wipe all data) to make this happen?
In which case, if I'm using something like Titanium Backup to restore apps + data, will it have a problem regarding things that have been moved with links2SD?

I'm scared to go down this avenue because I feel like all this little uncertainties will pop up and make this take hours of time to get my phone back to "working condition". :(

That and, it seems to be difficult to find links to original roms, etc, these days. A lot of the links in the sticky threads are dead. :(
 
I'm not sure if the update that bricem posted has enough assert props removed for you to use. We had nick_73 make one for us on the VM side that worked great.
If you have only "frozen" and not removed ANY stock apps, then the update in the first post in this thread will work without wiping anything. He said he removed the assert for recovery so you won't lose that either. Should be quite painless.
Sorry I don't have any files for sprint.
As for backing up and restoring apps that are linked, I kinda wonder that myself. I always unlink (and of course uninstall the ones that no longer fit) apps before backing up and restoring.
I learned not to keep my phone overloaded and holding soooo much "important" stuff that I'm scared to wipe it.

Madbat, I wish you were on the Sprint side of things. You are the most helpful person here, the Sprint side needs someone like you to be on top of things like this!

Currently, Chrome won't let me download the file in the post above, saying it is malicious code / virus. I could get around and use another browser, but the fact that there has been so little feedback, discussion, or even folks simply vouching for it, makes me hesitate.

But if this is, in fact, a clean file, you're saying I can flash it (I assume using TWRP, right?), and I won't lose root or recovery? Therefore, all my linked apps, etc, should be fine?
 
That is correct. But that is going by what the op says. Its simply an update, flashable in twrp. I have no way of testing it for you. As long as you have not modified your system beyond just rooting it should work. Frozen apps should be fine. If anything in your system is modified it will simply fail with an assert 7 error.

I've had android files get stopped for supposed malware which had none. But that being said, I do not know the member who posted the update in this thread so... Its kinda up to you.
 
Well, I'm happy to report this worked like a charm. Much less hassle than I expected! I can't believe I didn't do this right away.

Meanwhile, a happy side effect is that I'M ABLE TO ADJUST THE VOLUME IN PHONE CALLS! I don't want to jinx it, as resets temporarily fixed the problem in the past, but I've made at least 4 phone calls since applying the update, and they all allowed me to turn the call volume up and down, and never got stuck at max like before.

So, all in all, it would seem this update IS DEFINITELY WORTH IT for all us Sprint users!!
