[Sprint] Question About Installing Kernel

So I'm on the fence about installing a ROM. One of the main features I wanted from a ROM was overclocking. But then I see If I have a custom kernel I can overclock. But I have a few questions.

-Does installing a kernel change the UI at all? Like will anything look different, or is there no difference, it just changes how things work?

How do I figure out what kernel I should use?

If I install a custom kernel, will I still be able to install a ROM later, like cyanogenmod, because I believe ROM's come with kernels as well, or will it just overwrite the old kernel?

These questions may already have been answered in a guide somewhere but I couldn't find a guide to these specific ones.
thanks :D

The answers are 1) no, it doesnt change the UI, just the hardware performance/behaviour.
2) it has to be compatible with your device
3) yes, a rom will overwrite the kernel with its own one

Always have a nandroid backup before flashing anything ;)

To add to funky, it has to be compatible with the rom also...if you have a samsung, for example, a touchwiz rom or an AOSP rom.
And importantly, as funky stated too, make a nandroid backup before flashing the kernel:)

Could someone provide me a link where I can download a stable up to date kernel for my Sprint Galaxy Nexus?

And I have already backed up my phone with nandroid online backup

Well, tell ya what...if you can tell me what provider you are on, I can move this thread into the root forum for your device/carrier and others there can more readily help you out ;)

I assume you are rooted on the stock rom?

Edit: lol, just saw your edit about the nandroid...rooted you are then ;)

I already stated in my post but i'm on sprint

I also have one last question. If I install a kernel or rom, and dont like it, and i want to go back to when I backed up on nandroid, how do you do it? Do you go into recovery mode then restore then click on the backup you created?

Pretty sure it would be the same for the Nexus as it is for my S3, but I usually wipe, then restore (in recovery like you said). But basically yes, recovery--restore--navigate to your nandroid backup.

But I think the nandroid will overwrite without any wiping.
Not sure, so don't take that as fact :o
