Sprint's actually advertising now

Actually, at CES the banner above the convention center featured a Samsung Moment. But that was Samsung advertising it.
That's how I'd do it if I were them. Get the early adopters(almost always techies) and have them find/work out the issues until you have an update and then hit the market hard once you've got the bugs worked out that don't usually rear their ugly heads until real people own the phone.
Imagine how many people would have returned the phone simply because the battery meter was messed up. We're all still here because we knew it wasn't a dead battery but that error alone could have been devastating if they sent advertising out and tens of thousands of average joes ended up getting and then returning the phone.

Went to get my update today and no store in my area have even done it yet. The store went to had th phone for an hour and could not get it to work. He recalled having the same types of problems with the first big HTC update he did like this. He figured he'd have it ready by tomorrow.
He wasn't too excited about being the first person to do one either, as he knows his phone will be ringing non stop now for assistance. lol

Yea, tell that to my father. He just got one because he was jealous of everything my phone could do, so he went and got one under my nose. Now, he's thinking of returning it because of 'bad battery life'. I mean, I've told him several times, 'Just use the phone dad. You'll see it last the whole day @ 15%. It's just the meter is wack.' He still thinks that it's dead when it hits 15% unless I'm around. He's thinking of either getting the Hero or *blech* a normal nothing special flip phone, just because of the battery life. I want sooo badly to keep him here on this, as his fingers are REALLY stubby and he's almost... inconsiderate with the touch screen (really studdering un-confident pokes and jabs most of the time, he has a hard time unlocking his phone with the pattern) which would make him hate life to the max on the Hero. Then a normal flip phone option... let's just hope it doesn't get to this point.
I'm almost relying on the update for him so he doesn't drop this phone on it's head before it has time to get away from it's baby stage. Again, I think this peters to the fact that, at this time, this is more or less a work-in-progress device relying heavily on the community based around it to get it to work correctly and efficiently before it's 'released' (shown and advertised) to the general public mass.
Actually that is EXACTLY what they did.. With the Droid coming out from motorola as a QWERTY android phone, and the htc hero as the only android phone on sprints network (which doesn't have a keyboard).. along with its twin the droid eris being released, sprint and samsung needed to rush the moment out into the world before the droid took the position of only QWERTY keyboard android phone on a CDMA network.. this would have caused possibly major movement from sprint to verizon.. So they took the smart move, rushed it to the floor with the understandin they might loose some people.. but remember.. every one of us with a moment that still has it is 1 more person they get to keep and sold a moment to...

Sprint will still being playing catch up for a while. Verizon got it right, as was already discussed on these forums, the Droid is THE Android phone now(to the majority of the "non phone geek" public anyway) and Sprint keeps using the "with Google" thing, which IMO is stupid.
I noticed the advertising too. I first noticed it on Sprints website and then I began to see other web based advertising for it. Based on Sprints lack of love for the Moment I almost exchanged it for the Hero. I just couldn't do it and I'm glad I didn't. Oh and I noticed Sunday night that Gabby on Desperate Housewives used a Moment to show Carlos some pictures. I was shocked to see that. It made me happy! I know Sprint is a huge sponsor for the show but at least they used the Moment instead of one of the other phones.

haha that's pretty awesome! I'll have to watch for that when I finally watch the last episode off the DVR!

I think people at Sprint are realizing how big of a hit this phone is becoming.
I was looking through other phones with keyboards, Android, Windows Mobile, proprietary OS, Nokia, etc, and none of them had as nice of a keyboard as the Samsung Moment. This keyboard phone is really really nice.

Got an email from Sprint proudly adverstising the Samsung Moment. Also Best Skins Ever finally is offering a skin for the phone - about damn time!!!
I think a lot of companies / people under-estimated the popularity of this phone. Too bad for BSE I've switched to Phantom Skinz already and am very very happy with PS.

Yes all the sprint store ads show it with the tour and the pixi now. With the announcement at CES Samsung should start backing it in ads fairly quickly too hopefully. Go Moment!!!
