Sprints announcement thread...

...they want all their phones with slide-out keyboards back.

Seriously? You're going to take something as awesome as the Samsung S series and #$*@ it up with a slide-out keyboard?! All three other carriers managed to make it in slightly varying, yet gorgeous styles, and you go and add an antiquated, obsolete feature like a physical keyboard?!

Who the hell is begging for this as a feature, that they're put it on all their "NEW" devices?

CES came and went, and EVERYONE announced a slew of amazing android phones-- except sprint, who is left with its pants around its ankles. I'm eligible for an device upgrade, but their device selection is a joke.

Looks like I have to go to another carrier to get a new device. Thankfully, my ETF is only $100, and selling my trusty HERO on craigslist will defer some of that cost.

Er, okay. That was quite a rant. Anyway, Sprint tends to unveil their new devices during the CTIA conference that is in March. We may see some new handsets unveiled tonight at the Sprint event that is being held.

I am sure we will see some next generation handsets with dual-core CPUs and whatnot unveiled in the near future. On the subject of hardware keyboards, I personally, do not use them, but they are still hugely popular with a great percentage of smartphone and feature phone users. I am not sure why you think that it is obsolete technology. Every carrier features some handsets that have hardware keyboards and they do this because many of their customers demand them.

Not sure what this has to do with the Hero... off to the Sprint section it goes.

Personally, I don't need a physical keyboard that the Epic features, but I'm glad I got one that did have it as I personally find that when I use it that it is a useful feature.

I am also glad that we have options. That is, we have options of carriers, options of phones, options of operating systems. We can find the phone that suits our INDIVIDUAL needs and wants the best.

Found this when searching for Kyocera Echo on Sprint's website:

"The Kyocera Echo smashes the last barrier between you and the ultimate mobile experience. Its unique dual-touchscreen, pivot hinge design gives you all the space you need to run the apps that connect you to the people and information you need every day. Spread your work across all 4.7 inches of combined display or use each smaller display independently to run multiple apps. Closed, the Kyocera Echo is a pocket-friendly smartphone. Open it and expand your world."

4.7 inches combined??? I was interested when I first read it was going to 3.5 inches per screen, but unless they can figure out a way to make the screens come together seamlessly, it does not seem to be worth it.

It's only a matter of time before these things get corrected. MetroPCS is also facing some legal problems now due to their 'policy'. The wireless ISP's still can't legally treat one set of traffic differently from another, starting when Net Neutrality actually goes into effect.
Check this out.. It's a pretty detailed write up on new data policies:

4.7" combined? A whole .4" more than my Evo without hinges and flipping. If this is an industry first, there's a reason - everyone else thinks the idea is ridiculous at 4.7"!

Not a keyboard fan on small phones. Too many buttons. I thought I read somewhere where there's additional coding, and while that may not be overly complicated, it's still more code.

To the OP - ROFL. '07 actually called but instead of wanting sliders back apparently is trying to send them all to wipe that blight from it's record.

Horrible. I was also somewhat interested in dual 3.5 inch screens, if they were together to form 1 larger screen. If they form a combined 4.7 inch screen, I'm not interested at all.

What a letdown.

Why the heck would Sprint call this announcement and try to get everyone hyped up for a kyocera device anyway? Just when I start thinking Sprint is coming around they prove to everyone they still don't get it.

Next time Sprint sends out invitations there probably won't be as many people willing to fly to New York and cover it. I'd be pissed if I bought a ticket, hotel room, rental car, etc, and it turned out to be some crappy kyocera clamshell that just happened to be running android.

AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile all announced several major devices in the last few weeks. Sprint's response is a much hyped, invitation only event, to announce a kyocera clamshell? Wow.

this maybe 1 part of the announcement... they leaked this.. to put people off track.

maybe there is something bigger better... i hope.

That's why David Blaine will be there. Someone has to make the Sprint reps disappear right away if this is the news.

I'm still hoping that at some point Sprint's real announcement is buried and will be nationwide 4G by summer across all Sprint coverage areas. Probably not going to happen, but that would be magical and an industry first.

I cannot wait for the first of these devices to pop up on the web. The real test will be whether there are any bidders on eBay.

I'm not down with the slide-out keyboards. I think they add too much weight to a phone, and most people can grasp virtual keyboard with only a month or so practice. With that being said, like some have already pointed out, "slide-out" keyboards have a religious following, and I think the EVO and Epic still does Sprint enough good that they are just waiting a little longer (CTIA) to unveil anything new.

You could show a little patience, realizing that Sprint traditionally uses MWC not CES to debut devices. As for releasing ground breaking non slider phones in the recent past <cough> EVO <cough>! I would guess we'll see a replacement for that phone soon. Unfortunately, you'll already have paid the $100 to get a less capable device at a higher plan price...sorry. Oh, to make up for that "amazing" GalaxyS's "antiquated obsolete" slider? Samsung has decided to make its owners suffer with a semi broken GPS and no OS upgrade. Amazing!

In regards to this new dual-screen phone, I keep picturing a Nintendo DS looking device. I think that's the little kids game toy with 2 screens, right? I was trying to find a picture of it but no luck so far. I guess I'll have to wait til the big show tonight. I'm thinking this would be awfully bulky though. At least as bulky as a slide out keyboard but with hinges....I'm just not getting a good picture here.
I'm hoping we do see something better than this at tonight's announcement but if we don't I guess we're stuck for another week (?) til MWC or a month til CTIA.

I think the second part of the announcement is that Sprint is the First carrier charging people for an unlimited Data plan and an additional $10/month for phones that can use data. Sweet.
