Sprint's Hero or Moment phone?

if you read this thread you would see I've already switched to a Hero ;)

I have tested both devices and I have consistently seen the GPS work on the Moment, based on both of our sample size (4 phones vs 4 phones) maybe the ratio of bad to good is 50/50 <----this is just a joke I really have no idea
Yes, sorry I actually had seen that ;)

Well I do think there is something at systematically wrong with the moment's gps. I guess it's not all of them but it's enough that many people have the same issues, even with the tweaks. Just as a test I'm going to go to another sprint store in downtown pittsburgh and just try it and see what happens- that would make sprint store #3 :)

I am glad to hear that it works for some. Maybe it is a hardware manufacturing issue then as it can't be difference rom versions of the phone being distributed to through retail outlets.

You can get that thought out of your head. No way the Moment will get Sense UI. Besides, there are a lot of themes out there you can use, and some of them look pretty darn good.

That said, the biggest difference is the the Moment has a physical keyboard. Already been mentioned it doesnt run Sense. So its going to be a stock Android device.

So do you want or need a real keyboard, or do you want pretty out of the box (Sense)?

Keep in mind that besides the keyboard on the moment you can download the HTC hero virtual keyboard...so you can have that too. I am not saying the moment is better...I do not know....but just wanted to make the keyboard choice a little more up to date. good luck

I'm glad it's working consistently for you (really). I tried 4 devices with all the tweaks and tips (wi-fi off, location off, etc.). I tried it at the sprint store. It was inconsistent at best. I tried the units at the sprint store w/ the personell with the same results. I got mine the first weekend in Nov and took it back this past weekend. I didn't feel like a series of returns to maybe get a unit that worked right. With the tweaks it worked inconsistently and almost always didn't work indoors whereas my previous HTC Mogul always worked indoors except going through a tunnel.

Like I said, simply go to the sprint store, the Hero and the Moment are side by side, try and get a gps lock in google maps. Download the free compass app and see the results for yourself. I am not trying to promote the Hero, I am only sharing that I've tried the display unit and it worked, my new Hero worked immediately right inside the store. I went through 4 units of the Moment with the same quirky GPS results.

So it's up to you, just test drive it before you leave the retail outlet you buy it from.

I am not up to date on the moment or hero gps, but if the phones do not have a built in reciever and they depend on the phone signal...just be prepared when you are going somewhere and you lose that phone signal...you will not know when your next turn will be....and keep driving. I do like the fact that the gps is there..it can be useful and fun..But If you need a gps...buy a gps. I use my portable from motorcycle to car. It is a must have for me. good luck and enjoy

I just got the Hero yesterday via phone so it should be coming in a few days, but the reason why i choose the hero then the Moment is really because of Sense UI, simply because theres 7 menus not 3, and also the 5 MP rather then the 3.2 on the moment. Also the i spoke with the Sprint Agent and he told me HTC confirmed that the 1.6 update will be coming any time soon for the Hero and the 2.0 update will be here by the month of December:D. Cant wait
ps:The Moment has 1.5 Android like the Hero at this moment(laugh, i said moment twice)

I believe there are apps in the market and you can have more screens. Tons of apps are out and keep comming...We are testing. It is our complaints etc. that hopefully will improve the software and hardware we will see tomorrow....I have my frustrations...and i let it be known what i felt should be improved....i hope someone listens....good luck and enjoy

both phones are awesome

After owning the Moment and participating in Moment reviews and forums, I found that Moment owners are constantly preaching how it is the underrated phone (I was one of them), but after owning the Hero now I actually feel like it is the underrated phone to Moment owners. I hope that makes sense

I have very few complaints about each phone, they are absolutely amazing in their own right. I personally like the Hero for its stock features, including widgets, personalized contact list (facebook integration), usability (soft phone button)...I found myself adding a lot of apps to the Moment to make it look like the Hero (Open Home - beautiful widgets etc), so I figured why not just own the phone I'm trying to copy.

One of my favorite things about the Hero compared to the Moment is the fact that the buttons and trackball do not turn off when the phone is low on battery. On the Moment the back lights would turn off and it would bother me, especially if you were using the phone in the dark, which was not often, but often enough to be noticeable.

I've been able to sustain the same amount of battery life on both phones and if there is any difference it is too small to notice.

As for lag issues on the Hero, I don't seem to notice them any more than the small bits of lag I had on the Moment, so that is another difference that is too small to notice.

One of the biggest selling points for me when I purchased the Moment was the "beautiful" screen, well I finally sat down and compared the two phones side by side and if you simply switch youtube to high quality both phones look just about the same. Coming from an iphone where youtube videos were choppy and pixelated, both the Moment and Hero are a breath of fresh air. I realize that the AMOLED screen doesn't just apply to videos, but that is honestly the only thing I was concerned about.

As for design, the Moment looks cool imo, especially for a phone with a slide out keyboard, so that should be an obvious plus for the Hero. However, there are some things I dislike about the Moment such as the covers they put on the headphone jack, usb and the holder for the laynard is a lol point for me, really, laynards? I also prefer the track ball, which is not the most popular hardware feature from what I have read, but I do prefer it because I think it is slightly more accurate and the fact that it lights up. Also, even though the Hero isn't that much thinner or that much lower in weight, I still feel like it is much smaller when I hold it, I consider it to be much more efficient for those of us that like to use a phone with one hand, whereas with the Moment I feel like I have to use both hands. That is a very general statement and I can only offer you to try and hold both phones out of the box to understand my reasoning.

gps worked on the Moment, so I'm not too sure about that complaint. I read somewhere that if you turnf off wifi, gps should work and that seemed to be the solution for my Moment.

The qwerty keyboard was nice to have, but I actually prefer to just type on the screen quickly instead of opening and closing a keyboard. The only issue is the typos obviously, but that doesn't bother me. Also, I went through two Moments due to loose plastic around the keyboard, neither phone started that way, but after a few days of owning them the plastic keyboard started making a creaky cracking noise. This was probably due to carrying the phone in my pocket, but that should not loosen any parts on the phone (unless I was wearing skinny jeans lol). The defect was extremely minor and was not the reason I returned my second Moment for the Hero.

I probably should've addressed each specification in a neat manner, but oh well I hope this is helpful to anyone still trying to decide between the two phones.
It's really hard to choose.:o

I like Samsung Moment because of the slide out keyboard and the optional touch screen dial pad has BIG buttons. I returned the HTC hero as is was nothing but a nuisance.

There is one problem with Samsung Momement if you have downloaded applications like Weather channel which demands GPS "on" always that drains battery out quickly. I removed "Weather channel" and replaced it with another weather report which is not crazy about GPS and all that, and the battery life is much better now.

Samsung Moment is a nice phone relative to HTC hero.

which weather report to you download...and do you still like it or did you find better? thank you

If you NEED an physical keyboard then get the Moment, if you NEED to be able to customize with hard cases and skins then get the Hero! :) I chose the physical keyboard so my poor Moment is naked! ;)

I still like Samsung Moment. I had downloaded a program called "Automatic Task Killer" from Android Market and it suspends the weather channel (which cannot be uninstalled) when the phone goes into sleep mode. Then I downloaded "Moxier World" to check the weather. I also downloaded "Beatuful Widget" or something like that (paid version) to get a display of weather, time and date like the Hero. These programs are not crazy of GPS. My battery life is much better now. It is a crazy idea to incorporate the weather channel as I don't really like their weather forecasts and the beaming of GPS in out of control that takes up battery.

One question I have is that, will it spoils the battery if I charge it all night. I only charge till it becomes fully chagrged and then unplugs it. I presume these batteries have a memory.

I will not take the liability and answer re charging the battery....I leave mine on all night...everynight. I did that with my Palm Treo for years no battery problem...That is a different phone and different battery...but i continue the same practice with my samsung moment...
I think you should contact the Samsung...if it is not in any of the manuals. I just am taking it for granted ( i know stupid ) since there was no notice not to do it in the manual that came with the phone....Good luck

Lithium Ion batteries don't have the "memory" issues like Nickel Cadium batteries do.

The battery drops down the charge form 90% all of a sudden as it can't keep it very long. Also, the discharge from 30% to 15% is very rapid. The battery keeps its charge at 70% for a long time and also at 15%.

The discharge is not uniform with nothing running in the background. I would like to know other's experience in the battery discharge rate with respect to time.

You may download an utility called "Battery graph" or so from the Google Market.

The battery may be susceptible to cold condition and even some radio interference. I am not going to put a blanket or wrap it up with in Aluminum foil (in which case it may not even ring:mad:) to keep the phone from discharging erratically. The best thing may be to get a standby battery and download a reliable battery low alert program from the Google Market. I have downloaded one but it doesn't do anything. I am looking for a reliable battery alert meter. Cell phones are not reliable anyways but battery alert meter must be.

You do need SENSE UI for 7 home screens, that's what it's for the HTC Hero ;), also the camera is so perfectly good for me and the hero is better than the moment :D.

Im seriously going to scream.

You DONT NEED SENSE UI for 7 home screens. UGH!

The camera on the Hero isnt all that much better, and it lacks a flash.

Further proof that Sprint reps lie out their butts. HTC has already confirmed, get this, SKIPPING 1.6 and going straight to 2.0. So you'll be waiting on that 1.6 update for awhile.

I am currently debating which one of these to get as well but leaning towards the Moment after playing with both. Typing on a touch screen is just awful, a physical keyboard is so much quicker and easier. Some of the arguments here are just silly thought. Who REALLY needs 7 home screens?! I also noticed the Moment was really fast, noticeably faster than the Hero. I do like the pinch and grab to zoom on the Hero though, but thats about the only thing. Going to wait till March to decide, hopefully 2.1 will be out by then.

i would like the 2.0 or 2.1 upgrade especially since Adobe flash is supposed to only work with 2.0 or higher...I do agree about the keyboard....it is better than the virtual keyboard in many many instances...and i downloaded the hero virtual keyboard since i heard so many people say it is better...i do not know if it is ..but you can download it if you like it....About waiting for march...As long as you don't need a phone now the benefit would be a new phone that might come out. The main reason i went with android is because i feel it will be around a long time and google is too big and too well into cloud computing and that is the future and it is here. I can always get a newer phone and not have a problem with changing software and OS systems....So android has my vote...i only hope google does not let me down like apple does to their customers..

I still like my Samsung Moment as it has slide of Keyboard. Big peace of mind. I had HTC Hero and was anuisance which I retuned as it did not have slide out keyboard. It seems to be meant for people with little fingers and even then it doesn't enter right text or numbers. There are battery problem for other such phones as Android 1.5 does not have an option to close or exit a program after use. I use Advanced Task Killer to close programs.

I had contacted Samsung asking whether there woud be an upgrade to 2.0 and got an e-mail that there would be but no estimated time of release.

Just saw an extensive review on both these phones side by side and I am for sure getting the Moment. I couldnt believe that on the Hero while you are browsing the net, you had to exit out of it to use the pull down screen if you got any texts or emails while online. Thats beyond stupid and defeats the purpose of the pull down Android screen. HTC really screwed that one up.

Lmao! After reading an extensive review the only important difference you found was the inability to pull down the notification bar while browsing the internet? Well, I've got good news for you! Download Dolphin Browser (which I'm on right now) and Voila! You now have the ability to pull down the notification bar while browsing the internet.

I for one never had a problem with the notifications bar not being while browsing. The great thing about the hero's functionality is that it has numerous means to multitask. If u are in the browser and are reading texts/emails/streaming pandora, u can just press and hold the home key to bring up ur last 6 used apps. Viola... multitasking is still not a problem... u all have to do the research before u bash what the hero can and cannot do. And as acp pointed out, u can download the dolphin browser

Yeah, I had HTC Hero and even though I had to pay re-stocking fee, I returned it. It has so many drawbacks. I really like my Samsung moment. You need to find the right light application especially for weather widget which does NOT use GPS satellites. By the way, does anyone know of any program to uninstall the "weather channel" widget.

Samsung Moment even has the option to insert bigger memory SD card and in fact, it comes with an extra one . It also comes with an extended earphone and microphone which is of good quality.

What I like most is the slide out keyboard. What a peace of mind. It even beats iphone text messaging and Apple seems to have started advertising iphones as if they have some slide out thing and to the best of my knowledge it is the phone itself to be slided out in comparison with Samsung Moment.

Like what? (Based on your other comparisons, I'm really just looking for a good laugh)

Please be kidding, they have the exact same expandable storage (up to 32gb)...

I'm not even sure where to begin with this one lol
