Help Square half box on Unlock screen

Newbie
I have a brand new Nexus 7. 2013. When I hit the power button and the lock screen comes up, I am getting a half box white line on the upper left hand corner. Its about a 1.5x1.5in half box that is cut in half with the upper left hand part of the screen. It's as if there should be a widget there but its an outlined white box that's cut in half. Strange. Hope I described this good enough. It flashes then goes away before I unlock the screen.
Any ideas what this might be? Do I have a defective unit.

Just noticed this. When holding it in landscape, or sideways the white lines show as a box around the clock. Now this I understand, but why would this shoe up when holding it in portrait mode as a half box in the upper left hand corner?????

I have seen the same thing. It has been a guess of mine that it is reminding me that I can slide over to see the clock. I don't think it is a defect.

It's like a "reminder" that you can add more widgets to the lock screen. Not the most attractive, but that's what it is.

Glad to see that I'm not the only one with this issue. Its quite annoying. I DO NOT need a reminder to let me know that I can add more widgets to my lock screen. I have been trying to figure out how to remove this but no luck yet. Hopefully someone will come up with an answer.
