Help started having problems connecting my phone to PC

I'm not sure whether this is a windows or HTC problem so far but it seems it may be a combination of the phone and the driver available complicated further by Windows 7 insisting on auto installing drivers itself when you connect hardware.

For whatever reason I am having serious issues trying to get my phone to connect to my laptop both at home and at work, two different machines. I have ALWAYS been able to use it on my work laptop for the past 3-4 months with no issue, I use it to store a document which I work on regularly in excel.

Seems now when I connect my phone via my USB cable the laptop simply doesn't recognise that it is connected, the phone seems to behave as if its getting a charge, and it frequently crashes and comes up with the logo to give you the option to send an error report to HTC

My phone seemed to only be having a problem syncing, no matter what I tried at home it would recognise as a disc drive but never as a Sync device, but now at work it won't even recognise as a Disk Drive, the phone simply shows that its charging.

I've tried uninstalling Sync, redownloading and installing it, rolling back drivers via device manager.... no dice. any ideas guys? thanks

Well i have an official htc one at home and a 3rd party one at work and as mentoned im hvaing similar problems at both locations. And the machine hasnt changed at work but i've only started having this issue since the weekend at home and monday at work

sorry for the double post but I got the error again here it is:

I think there may be a problem with my cable or (HOPEFULLY not) the port on the bottom of the phone might be failing, I plugged the phone in via the same cable to another machine here and it gave me the above error which is what I had been getting at home on my new laptop, and then yesterday and today I've been having trouble with my work laptop (which is the same model) where it doesn't seem to recognise the device AT ALL but it seems it could be the cable is the issue in this instance. But at home the cable should be fine as its the official one and yet I get the error above when trying to get my phone to Sync with HTC Sync. Anyone got any idea?

to clarify/reiterate: at work my phone was not recognising at all today, I have a 3rd party cable at work and it APPEARS that this could be the problem at work

At home my cable is an official one and for some reason it recognises it as a disk drive but not as a phone. The laptop at home has been newly built etc. Hopefully it is just a problem with both HTC cables, I have ordered 4 generic 3rd party ones from Amazon.co.uk so we shall see if that solves the whole problem. I just thought it a bit strange that it wont work with HTC Sync on EITHER of my two laptops, both at home AND at work. thanks

I might give that a try, thanks.

To be fair I don't really care about the HTC Sync part of it, the only reason it annoyed me was because I had rebuilt my laptop and was trying to install all my software again and it seemed as though maybe I had done something wrong with the new install of Sync and the drivers etc as it had always worked before. I don't care too much about Sync but I need to be able to connect my phone to my pc so I can move photos, videos, docs and perform data clean up from time to time. I have Wireless File Transfer Pro so I can move files but its not the same as having the phone connected like a usb drive

Fair enough mate... I know that a lot of people prefer my phone explorer to sync. I haev it, but hardly use it... don't really sync my phone at all!

no no thats a good idea I'll try the program you mention I just meant innitially it wasn't the sync problem that bothered me I just got annoyed cos I thought I'd done it wrong after I rebuilt this laptop at home with win 7 lol

Regarding my issue, I'm home now and can confirm that the phone works as a drive here still, works perfect, however the HTC Sense still doesn't connect which is a bit annoying, anyone else got this issue with getting Sync to recognise the phone? I still think its a problem with the HTC Driver or the driver that Windows auto-installs when you connect the device

Does your phone prompt you for how you want to connect when you plug it in to the PC?

Settings -> Connect to PC, what's the default connection type?

it doesn't prompt no, it is set to drive as default, when I click Sync and then ok it says looking for sync on your computer for a long time, times out and ends up either hanging, crashing or just plain nothing

hi again, ok so I got a new cable and used it at work today, connects as a disk drive again fine no problems, however at both my house and work I am still unable to sync with HTCSync, you connect the phone in "sync" mode and it says looking for HTC sync on your pc, then on my PC Iget a dialogue about installing device drivers, then the install fails and when I went back to the phone it had crashed and reset itself. Is it possible that the phone crashing causes the driver to not install correctly rather than the computer crashing my phone?

It could be, but if HTC Sync is installed the drivers should already be there.

DURX suggested it above, but if you uninstall HTC Sync, you could give MyPhoneExplorer a go? If that worked, that would point to HTC Sync being the issue and not the handset itself.

ok I finally tried out the myphoneexplorer app and I managed to get it working, basically I turned phone debugging on on my phone via that program and FINALLY the HTC Device /android device installed correctly on my laptop and connected to HTC Sync... what a bloody piss take, anyway it finally connected so thanks guys

ok strangely when debugging is on it will allow me to view my phone in HTC Sync but AS SOON AS I turn debugging off it forces it to "Charge Only"

And when your in Sync it doesn't recognise the device 100%, it shows the overview fine but the contents is all wrong, it says 9.2gb free and 0 bytes taken up under ANY category, that can't be right, I have a 16gb sd card and less than half free!

Just to let you guys know after the the new android version installed on my phone it connects to my computer fine again.

I now have a problem where the wallpaper doesnt work the same anymore, when you move through th 7 sense pages on the home screen the wallpaper stays static instead of how it used to work which was that the picture would stretch to fit across the 7 screens so that as you scrolled you saw more of the picture. Bit annoying that it doesnt do that anymore
