Root Starting to develop ROMs?

I've been on Android for about a year or so now, and I really love the amazing work that developers put out (I had an HTC Hero, then an Optimus S, and then now this wonderful phone), and I want to start developing. I've done some small edits to ROMs and flashed them for my own personal use (build.prop edits, some init.d scripts, modifying .apks etc) but nothing too major.

What I'd like to hear from devs is when/how did you guys start developing? Did you guys have previous programming experience (I know basic Java, and picking up C++ pretty fast :P )? Did it help at all (I know app developing is different than building a ROM)?

I had no previous programming knowledge (and still don't know crap lol). You seem pretty good to go :)
