I guess I am cursed to have a bad Android expereince. I bought a brand new i727 for my wife's birthdays and the dumb thing does not work right out of the box. The phone seems to work in all regards, but it is showing no cell service to the AT&T towers. I set my i727 right next to it and while my phone shows full bars, her phone shows the little no service symbol. I thought it might be her old sims card, but the problem persist even after I got her a new sims card today. It does connect every now and then, but only for a few minutes and only with one bar of signal. What is the deal with me and android phones? ARRRGGG!

sometimes.. the antenna was not fully plugged in. a simple fix to try out.

but since your device is new.. maybe returning it for a new one is better idea
 
That does sound a bit like a hardware issue. I'd definitely look into exchanging that device.

You might want to check with AT&T to make sure her account is provisioned properly. The easiest way is to put your sim in her phone and hers in yours. If the problem switches to your phone, then it's the account. If her phone still doesn't connect, then it's most likely a bad radio/antenna and you need to return it.

Surly they would have cauht this when I took it in to AT&T to get it fitted for a new sims card. I bought it on ebay from a seller named "wirelessbliss". They have a 99.6% positive feedback ratio out of 16,525 feedbacks. That is exceptionally high for anyone selling electronics on ebay. They have the best customer service I have ever seen on ebay. I sent them one email about my problem and they immediately shipped out a replacement to me with a prepaid return label to send the old one back. Now that is what customer service should always be like! Even Amazon.com makes you ship everything back to them before sending out the replacement. Found me my favorite eBay phone seller.
 
That's pretty good service - especially from a US eBay seller.

My experience with Google (in the UK) was similar when my original Nexus 4 required replacement under warranty. The new phone arrived next day with a prepaid return label for the old one. Can't ask for better service than that.

Incidentally, Amazon UK will also send a replacement without waiting for the return so perhaps it's a more common practice in the UK than in the US - even when it's a US company like Amazon.
 
UK companies must trust the customer more. Most US companies take the approach of treating everyone as though they are dishonest thieves they cannot trust. This is why they require you to send the defective product back before sending out a replacement.

I have sold on ebay for 10 years and I have a 100% feedback and have never received a single neg. My personal customer policy and general life policy is

"It is better to treat 20 people as though they are honest and risk getting burned by one, then to unjustly treat everyone as though they are dishonest, so that I might not get burned by none."
 
From what I've experienced of most NY camera stores (but notably not B&H, the honourable exception) the salesmen are all crooks so it's not surprising they assume all their customers are as well. I'm sure the same applies to other consumer stuff like phones.

I suspect the UK would be much the same if we didn't have much stricter consumer law than the US - which is why (for example) Google can fob off warranty claims from the customer to the manufacturer of the phone in the US, but here in the UK are forced by law to handle warranty claims directly.

I'm generally not a big fan of "too much" law but I'm certainly glad we have the "Sale of Goods Act 1979" :-)
 
Okay. I got the new phone in, but all is not well. It fired up fine. The android interface looked unfamilure so I looked at the version and found that it is version 2.3.5. So I plugged it into Kies to upgrade it and it says that the phone has the latest firmware. I know that is not true because I have the same model and it is running 4.1.2 and the first phone the guy sent me I also upgrade to 4.1.2 through Kies. The funny thing is that Kies is giving a funny code for the current firmware on the phone which makes me think that there is something wrong. Here is what Kies say the firmware is.

What is going on here. Has this phone been rooted or something?
 
Have you tried booting it into download mode to see if the flash counter has been tripped?
is the skyrocket a rebranded s2?
Youll be able to manually update it using Odin :thumbup:

I know how to do a hard reset by holding the up and down vol key and the power keys down. Is that the same thing as download mode?

My problem is that this is supposed to be a brand new phone, not a refurb. I can pay a lot less then what I paid for this for a refurb. This first phone this seller sent me did not work and now this one cannot be updated and is reporting some odd firmware. I like this sellers customer service policy, but I want to believe they are being honest about selling me a brand new phone. This second phone also had a cracked back cover. Could have been a factory defect. I get funny feelings when thing don't work smoothly, you know what I mean?
 
Yeah know what you mean. I think a new phone should be able to update though.
If its the same as the s2 its (while turned off) power, home and volume down for download mode then (i think) volume up to select "yes".
See if the flash counter is above "0" :thumbup:

I got it into download mode by holding the up and down vol and pluging a usb cable into it, but I saw no counter at all.

Don't you think that firmware version Kies is reporting is a little suspicious. I mean I have used Kies to apdate all my phone and Kies always shows the version like this, 4.1.2 or 2.3.5 or something like that. I have never seeen it report anyting like it is reporting about this phone.

Have you put the sim in it? I recall that the Galaxy S only would update through Kies Mini and the S2 from AT&T would only update OTA. And, I think the flash counter only shows in custom recovery, but if the flash counter were anything else but 0 (zero) you'd see a big yellow triangle when you boot it. if you don't see it, I doubt it's been flashed.

Yes I put a valid sims in it. I tried updating OTA, but it says it has the latest version as well. I talked to an AT&T Engineer a couple of days ago about a different problem and he told me that Kitkat has been released for the i727 and that I should be able to update my i727 to Kitkat.

What are some possible reasons why this phone will not update past 2.3.5?
 
I'm trying to remember what the Kies messages might mean. It's been a while. First, if your phone were flashed or running a non-official ROM, the message would read "Your phone does not support updating through Kies." If the message is as you state that you have the most current version installed, then perhaps it's because you've already updated a (different) skyrocket on the same PC.

I'd also make sure you have the latest version of Kies and see what version Kies says you have. Does it match what the phone says?
 
Never mind. I flashed the phone with Odin to 4.1.2. Works fine. I like this seller, but I think his source is fooling him. I don't believe these are new, unopened, undamaged phones as is stated in the ebay listing. Both phones came with generic battieries and chargers and the boxes were not sealed. The back cover was cracked on this second phone too. I just swapped the back out for the one on the phone with the bad antenna. Poor seller. Guy accidentally sent me two replacement phones. I never opened the second package and am sending it back to him along with the defective one. I hope he has a talk with his source after this.
 
My phone was really sluggish so I uninstalled some apps I was not using very often and my phone sped up a a little and my used memory dropped from 90% to around 75%. The performance difference is noticeable. I thought well, I wonder how much better it would get if I got rid of all the bloatware on my phone so I rooted it. Yep! Sign me up for the rooted club. I know I said I did not want to, but I figured what the heck, I can always flash back the stock rom like I did on my wife's new phone if thing go wrong.

So now my phone is rooted, but now I have a new question, how do I determine what is bloatware? I mean, there are like a hundred preinstalled apps on my phone. I figure that anything AT&T can go, but what about all these other apps like Allshare, Mog Music, all the Google Play apps like Google Play Movies and TV, Media Hub, Talkback, Featured Apps, Visual Voicemail, etc, etc, etc?

The general rule i go by is that any app thats visible in your app drawer can be safely uninstalled. Obviously not the Settings app though :D
Also dont uninstall the messaging app or the stock launcher :thumbup:
