Step by Step for a new rom?

Ok so I'd like to start running Cyanogenmod on my S2. The problem is that I can't find a step by step for how to get it running. I see a lot of help for rooting, and then installing new roms. But I have no idea what order and what I'm supposed to do. For example, I can't find the difference between a kernel and a rom? is there a difference? Also, do I need to root my phone to install a new rom/kernel? What does Odin do? Where do I get a new kernel for my phone? How do I know I'm installing the correct kernel/rom? How do I make the choice?

I just have no idea. Could someone help?

Yes there is. A big difference. See here in Slug's excellent post, under, "Common Terms/Acronyms you may encounter:".

Yes, you do if you want to install a custom kernel or ROM. See,"Rooting Galaxy S2 - A Dummies Guide", for a detailed, step-by-step, guide, with video, on how to root your phone.


What does Odin do?

Odin is PC software that enables the flashing of kernels and ROM's amongst other things. For more details, see here.

Thank you very much ironass! I have one problem though, I can't find the "LD3" kernel for my Bell Galaxy. It's a i9100M running stock ICS. Does a rooting kernel for this exist? Otherwise I don't think I can root it :'(

Can you go to...

Settings > About phone > Kernel version

and post exactly what it says.

Also, can you type in to your dial pad...

and give the information there as well.

There is no CF-Root kernel for the LD3 and so you will need to use the nearest CF-Root equivalent of either the LP7 or LP8.
 
Will that work? What happens if it doesn't and I need to go back? Wouldn't I be screwed because I can't get the original kernel again? That's the only thing that worries me.

Also, one more question. I notice that you are using a sidyah kernel. I took a look and it appears that Sidyah kernels don't really have a "version" number, like LD3 or LP7 or 8. How do you know that Sidyah will work with your phone?

You would have to flash the entire ROM, which includes the kernel, for your CSC.

The Siyah kernel is not like the stock kernels. You can just use the latest one for either Gingerbread or ICS, depending on which platform your ROM is.
 
so glad i found this thread!! been searching for hours and couldnt figure out why there were no LD3 cf-root kernel's. i have the exact same phone.

Hello and welcome to Android Forums JROC321! :)

So, you have the Sansung Galaxy S25, GT-i9100M, variant on ICS.

LP8 would be the CF-Root kernel of choice for Bell. See, here.

To revert back to your stock firmware, you would flash the stock I9100MUGLD3, Bell, ICS firmware via Odin as per the instructions under, "I have rooted/unlocked my phone. Can I get ICS", in post #1, here.

I like it so far, mind you it's the only custom ROM I've ever used. No major issues. A few small bugs here and there, but it will only get better as more RC's are released (I havn't been flashing any of the nightly builds).
