Root Step-by-step guide to get Cyanogen Installed

UBRocked

VZW Nexus Please!!!
Okay, I have received several PM's on this but tonight, someone asked me to give a complete step-by-step walkthrough. It's Easter and I figured I could use the good Karma :D

I have removed the name of the user that asked for this even though they didn't care...I just prefer to keep it anonymous and if that person identifies himself...cool...I just don't want to do it.

I figured this might help someone else so here it is:

Hi, i wanted to ask you if you would could explain to me step by step how to switch over from dm1.0 to koush's rom. I have rom manager installed already. I originally and obviously rooted via sholesmod/dmmod updater which i found easy obviously. I understand i have to flash clockwork firs, which i did. When i tried about 3 weeks ago to install koush's rom through rom manager it went into clock work and i dled the rom and set it to install, i just got boot loops, luckly i backed up and was able to get back tom Dmod. Hoping you could help me with this.

Step by step huh? Read this entire message before you do anything...

Okay, here goes...Anything you've done in the past...forget it. I had trouble with earlier releases of Rom Manager and what probably happened is that something got messed up during install...those issues shouldn't happen now.

Before starting make sure you back up your ROM...you've seen the importance of this...but I have to say it :D

1) Go to the market and see if there is an update to Rom Manager (current is now 1.8.4.3 and there have been SEVERAL update and you want the latest release).

2) It will prompt you to install the latest version of Clockwork Recovery (currently it is 1.8.0.4 but it changes often).

3) Once you have the latest recovery, click on Download ROM > then Cyanogen > then Cyanogen 5.0.5.4 > now you'll see a popup...make sure google apps IS checked. At this point, the download will start

4) When the download finishes, you will be prompted to install ROM and I believe it ask you if you want to backup your current rom (do it again as it will backup in Clockwork format) and it will ask you if you want to wipe data...YOU DO (this will erase all of you installed apps...you may want to install Titanium backup...even the free version of will work...but it is much slower and more time consuming) so you can restore your apps.

Phone will reboot into recovery and format data, then install the ROM. When you boot back up...you should have Cyanogen on your phone.

NOW...That I have done typed all of that...my personal recommendation is to do steps 1 & 2 then go here and download JRummy's remix...it looks better then stock Cyanogen and is the best themed version of Cyanogen that I have found (better than NexTheme IMO). You also get additional hacks and optional scripts (much like Bugless Beast v0.9).

Good Luck and enjoy!

Just to add:
Make sure your phone is fully charged first (seems obvious but I and many others have been lazy in this area).
Do a Titanium backup first of apps and app data (you do NOT want to restore system data from Titanium as setting up your new ROM's basic settings from scratch will yield best results).

I'm currently using DroidMod and thinking about switching. Do I just go ahead and follow this guide or do I have to delete DroidMod first? (N00b here obviously). Thanks.

I forgot that many people that are rooted don't have the new baseband installed. Below is the question posed and then my response...

Just wanted you to know first time was a charm, wow that was easy, bye bye droid mod. I am on koush's rom first, i will try jrummys very shortly.thank you so much for your help. One other question, i wanted to install the baseband zip, when it ask me to wipe or backup, i should not need to do that right? Also since i have everything backed up through my email such as apps and info, is there really a need for titanium backup?, i wipe every time and by signing in my email everything always comes back via sync. Thanks man so very much

Glad it worked. Thanks for the response!

No you do not need to wipe data. You WILL have to reactivate your phone when you switch to the new baseband (one time only...you won't need to update this again)...and don't freak if it doesn't work the first time...mine took 2 tries and then it took a few minutes for some services to catch up (like data connection through VZW).

Haha...you move off of DM...update to the latest Cyanogen in the early AM hours...now I see that Cyanogen 5.0.5.6 is out. Welcome to romming...updates all the time...this ain't DM :D

If you are running 5.0.5.4, you can update to 5.0.5.6 without wiping data but make sure you back up first.

Once you get more comfortable with this, there are other hints and tricks that will help your ROM run smoother (not everyone does these things so it is not mandatory)...but formatting the system, cache, and boot partitions before switching to a new rom just cleans some of the cobwebs out so you can start with a clean slate.
