Just something for your #4, you need to install fastboot to flash recovery its the only way, also if you are running stock 2.1, installing a rom through recovery could cause problems, you should always flash your initial custom rom through fastboot.

3. Backup your current ROM. This can be done using ROM manager from the android market. If you are having trouble with this look for your ROM on this page LG GT540 Optimus Swift Original Stock ROM Firmware Package ~ Android Solution and download it.

You can't backup your ROM with ROM Manager. It doesn't support the GT540. The only way to backup your ROM from stock Android is to flash a fastboot KDZ, then flash recovery through fastboot; while installing the fastboot KDZ will wipe the phone anyway. Making backing up the ROM useless.
