Steve Jobs, Person of the Year

“The smartphone has changed the world as much as the Bible has,” said celebrity chef Mario Batali, who was pro-Jobs at Time‘s annual POY panel debate in New York.

Rather an overstatement isn't it? Considering that much of the world doesn't actually have smart phones. Many people where I am have basic dumb phones NOT smart phones. Most of the world has Bibles though. Unless Mario Batali's use of the word 'world' actually means the United States. What does a celebrity chef know about tech anyway?

I agree. Super Mario was likely looking for sound bytes so he said something stupid. Jobs was a great man, but the Bible was far more important.

Are you kidding? Celebrity Chefs know all, see all, and season all.

Isn't the person of the year awarded to the person who was the biggest newsmaker/influence that particular year. Jobs wouldn't even make that list. The iPhone 4S is not hugely innovative and I'm not the only one who thinks so. Pundits tend to agree with me.

Funny. Steve really wanted to be Time's man of the year back in the day when he released the Apple ][, and they dissed him by making the computer the item of the year rather than a person. And though he was featured heavily in the accompanying article, it was at times very unflattering of him.

I remember that edition.

If it's the smartphone they're so enthralled with, maybe it's time for the 2nd non-human to take the honor.

So let it go to their heads and then tell them only way he got it was because he died. Even with everything he did over the years it wasn't enough to get him the title.

I thought to be Times person of the year, you need to be alive.

It's like if you die before you're announced for a Peace prize, you're disqualified :( I think one of the scientists died a couple of days before the announcement.

I just don't want to spend the next decade hearing how the iPhone has changed the world more than the Bible. I know that's not what the article says, but it's what the fanboys will read. And Jobs didn't invent the smartphone either.

Keep in mind that it was Mario Batoli who said that smartphones changed the world more than the bible. He's a celebrity chef, and a good one, but I don't hold him in high regard when it comes to assessment on technology, unless it's a turbochef oven or something.

One out of three people on the planet are Christians. If you add in Jews and Muslims (religions that use the Bible or parts of it) then you've got half of the population of the entire world that's been influenced by the Bible. This assumes the other half of the world has never even heard of the Bible. Meanwhile, something like 15% of people in the world have smartphones. The quote is ridiculously ludicrous.

When I read that statement my mind immediately went back to 1966 and the statement by John Lennon that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus. That opened a serious can of worms back then...

Wait....Muslims read the Bibles? They believe in the same GOD as the Christians and Catholics!!!!:eek::eek::eek:

I'm playing devil's advocate here:

just because half the world knows of the bible doesn't mean it changed the world as much as smartphones. After all, most of the human population knows what gravity is. and gravity hasn't changed on earth much :)

Now that iTunes has the Beatles catalog, maybe the Pope should consider replacing his Blackberry.

I can dig up my old western civ book and flip to the chapter about Christianity's influence on the western world if you'd like. :)

Let him have his man of the year. Not like he can enjoy it. After all he is dead.

Honest question - Besides dying (which is obviously tragic), what did Jobs do this year that was particularly newsworthy?
