Under Steve Jobs' leadership, Apple became the prominent company that it is and has changed the tech industry. Although I don't currently use any Apple products, I have done so occasionally in the past. I do find some of their products impressive and understand why people like them. Even the products I use now are in part influenced by successful Apple products. No doubt his body of work has touched many of us at some point in time.
I speculate that his reason to resign is due to health issues he has been dealing with recently. I cannot imagine it would be for any other reason.

In the statement, Jobs laments having to leave and strongly suggests a replacement. Here's a copy of his resignation letter:
To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:
I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple''s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.
I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.
As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.
I believe Apple''s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

He's gone in a few months. You think he'd resign this far before the iPhone 5 release if there wasn't something dire happening?

More like sell.
To make money in the stock market, you buy when everyone is selling, and sell when everyone is buying. At the end of the day tomorrow, Apple stock should look like a pretty good deal.

did google make such a footprint in the industry that he just doesn't think apple has much room to grow? that's my initial thought.

My thought is to buy 15~20 shares tomorrow and sell them after the iPhone 5 is announced.

Honestly it sounds like the same kind of step back Bill took. "I no longer bear this title, but if you think I'm taking a pay cut or have any less say in what goes on around here, ha... ha... ha." Aka, nothing has changed but the sign on their office doors... or office floors, as the case probably is with execs of companies that size.

Actually Gates has very little say in what MS does these days.

Now. When he originally stepped back he had quite a hand in things for a little while after. I think he finally decided it was time to focus on personal projects and hobbies and stepped all the way back... he's actually got some interesting stuff out there on nuclear energy and some other topics.

I think Microsoft really took a big hit after Gates left.

I wonder how did Jobs feel about the lawsuits? Legitimate question. Did he approve, condone? Disagree? Would he be the final say so in these lawsuits or are different parts of the company run by their own head people that can make the final say on things?

It's sad and interesting. It's sad that he's leaving because he's sick but I'm really interested in the future of the company and the impact to the technology industry. Jobs will still have a lot of control on how Apple operates if he still has the energy to talk but I think this opens the doors for Apple to open up a bit.
Jobs really did a good job (no pun intended) in steering Apple to where it is today. I think Apple helped with the progression of the smartphone industry. It sped it up quite a bit with the release of the Iphone. I'm so glad because the Moto Q was my first smartphone and that device sucked but I knew that I could never go back to a regular phone again. With Apple showing that the smartphone industry could be a lucrative industry, it sped up progression and now we have a ton of smartphones to choose from.
Of course, this is entirely my point of view.

When you look at the history of Apple, it's success seems to be tied to Jobs/Woz. When both were running it, it was extremely successful. Then Woz left and Jobs got forced out. The company floundered and flopped and that's being generous. They got propped up by MS just because MS didn't want to deal with regulators saying they had a monopoly on the market. Jobs comes back to the company and the company takes off again. If I was an investor I'd be extremely concerned. Yes, the iPhone 5 is in the pipes. The iPad 3 is in the pipes as well I'm sure. Where does Apple go beyond that?
The iPhone 6 & the iPad 4?
Seriously though, that is a good question; what's left for them to innovate? Maybe a tablet/phone hybrid?
I don't think this is doom and gloom for apple, but if I was an investor, I might be slightly concerned unless they have something very clever up their sleeves.
He has been ill for a while, it's probably down to that. As much as I'm not a fan of the guy, I don't wish bad of him and you can't really argue with what he's done for tech in general.
