Steve Jobs takes leave

I think Apple will go on well enough without Jobs for a good while. That whole company shares his vision that is the company itself (follow?).

And I sincerely do hope Apple continues to make exceptionally beautiful/reliable products. It's what pushed Android to even exist not to mention so much else.

Competition is good, and Steve Jobs is the best there is.... even if he is a douche. ;)

With Android devices moving into the iPod space, there is going to be much more competition in the iPod line.

The biggest thing that iOS has for it, is Apple devices are seen as a status symbol. If they become a negative status symbol. If it becomes clear that iOS devices are second tier devices, or second rate devices, they will go away.

There is no room for niche devices in the mobile market like there is in the desktop/laptop market.

I don't necessarily agree with you on that. The Zune is competitive with the iPod hardware wise and functional wise, yet it has no marketshare at all compared to the iPod. It's a perfectly fine device and seems to get good reviews. People who have it like it. It has no market share. Apple owns the PMP market space and I don't see that going away. People see the iPhone and the iPad as status symbols, but they don't with the iPod.

I have to disagree. The iPod is absolutely seen as a status symbol. I think the iPod and iPod touch are going to go away... as more people purchase smartphones that have the same functionality, they aren't going to carry around two nearly identical devices. So, I think that's moot to begin with.

I think that short term, they will be fine, but I don't think that they will be long term. Steve Jobs is an awful person to work for. Steve Jobs hoarded all of the power, and the ambition in the company in the CEO position.

If the culture doesn't change, without Steve Jobs cult following to hold it together, the company will fall apart.

If the culture DOES change, the company may fall apart anyway.

Apple will fail without dictator jobs. You forget, Apple used to have all the marketshare of of Personal Computer market too.

I'm worried
what will Android have to strive to beat then?
Symbain? lolololol
BB?
I'd like to see MeeGo do well, lets see

I certainly hope iOS keeps its marketshare

Long term (10-15 yrs) you may be right. They certainly faltered during the 80s after Jobs left. Short term (5-10 yrs) I can't agree. Their plan is basically set already for this year. New iPad in a few months. New iPhone in June. New iPods in September. The first two will be hits like they always are. The latter who knows. It's the next product cycle that'll be interesting.
