Root Still on rooted 2.1 (Unrevoked) need help...

Newbie
I rooted only for the free wireless tethering capability and now I am stuck on 2.1 and would like update to Froyo. I have read all the forums about flashing a custom rom etc, but it all seems to go over my head.
Does anyone have advice on the easiest/best way to update to 2.2 but keep root and wireless tether, etc? Can I just accept the ota 2.2 update and re-root or would that mess things up?

Sorry I'm such a noob, but thanks in advance for the help!
 
Since u are on the first unrevoked you don't have full root which means your NAND is not unlock,try Simple Root to fully root your phone and after that flash any Froyo ROM of your choice.

I am pretty sure that I am on Unrevoked 3.1... Does that make a difference?

I believe you can, but I'm not too sure how to do it... Most of the guides seem pretty advanced and I don't want to brick my phone or break camera, 4g, wifi, etc.
