Root Stock android on x

Good morning,

I was in BB last night picking up my Xoom (Which I am very pleased with) and I picked up the DX unit they had for people to try and it had no Motorola Software on it and was a stock Android build. The only moto widgets I care about are the toggles (Mainly the Wi Fi toggle), but otherwise I can seriously do without the Moto Blur crap. I used to load custom blackberry builds or leaked blackberry builds when I was blackberry additct, so is that what that was at Best Buy? How can I get a stock android OS on my Droid X? And just out of curiosity will that improve performance without the Moto stuff on there?

Does anyone recommend NOT doing this if it is possible?

The DX they had was not a stock Android build.

No way.

What makes you think it was?

Maybe I am wrong, but it had no hints of motoblur. For instance when I went to add widgets there were no options for adding moto widgets. There were also only 5 home screens with none of that moto navigation that comes up when you go from one HS to another. Does that just mean certain settings were adjusted?

I am sorry, I am not familiar with what a launcher is therefore I was unable to look. Would that help the performance at all? I am on 2.3.340.MB810 and I am not very pleased with the performance overall which is why i started checking out the ROM/root section of this forum to see what customs people were using to enhance this or eliminate blur.

2.2 Android, but the system version is what I listed above which I understand is different than the Android version.

You don't live in NW Houston do you? lol I was in a BB the other day and installed LPP changed it to default and downloaded bluetooth file transfer and put a bunch of custom icons on to make it pretty.

edit: don't know who's profile it was linked to for the market to work but it did so I felt obligated to help the phone out.

Easy way to explain the difference in launchers is that its the app that you use to launch the other apps and handle the home screens. The blur launcher has an arrow in the middle and a phone and contact image on either side (i think) adw looks like the stock android with the block in the middle then a browser and phone on either side.

So basically there is no way to get the dumb motoblur stuff off? I am assuming just using a different launcher to change the aesthetics doesnt help performance any correct?

Well I used to do that with blackberrys a couple years ago, but found that they were not as stable. Do the available ROMs that remove the BLUR have much stability? Sorry, I am new to this.

For the most part, yes. Most of us are either running apex 1.4 or liberty 1.5 without problems. I'm using liberty now because there are more themes for it but most people have no problems with them. And any problems that people do have, they report them here and fixed soon. Its usually user error as opposed to an unstable rom.

If you root, you can easily switch between ROMs to check them out. If you don't like them you can always restore a back-up of the stock ROM. If you are unhappy with your Droid X as is, then I recommend doing it. Since you've pretty much done this before with blackberries, I'm sure I don't need to remind you to just be careful and make sure you know what you are doing before you do it.

thank you for the help. I do always take backups before loading new software so that will not be a problem. I was under the impression moto locked down the X, no?
