Help Stop auto connect to open wireless networks

How can I stop my phone from automatically connecting to open wifi networks. I was at my friends house the other day and I looked at my phone and it was connected to someones open wifi. I really don't want my info being transmitted through random peoples networks.

I think the only option is to turn wireless off.

In the wireless settings, there's an option to notify when an open network is available. Is that on or off?
