Root Stop System Update reminder

Well it's official. It turns out that replacing the Build.prop has indeed fixed the annoying update messages :) Yay I can keep my rooted android.

btw:

I use
Boat Browser Mini

works great for me then the regular Browser. I find all the other browsers are a bit bloated. I tried xScope Browser and I didn't really find it user friendly. Boat Browser has the Gingerbread copy and paste ability :D

Can't say I've ever heard of 'launcher2'.

Someone mentioned Go Launcher yesterday and I took a look at it. I installed it and gave it a whirl. It's not that different from the Stock Launcher but has a lot of flexibility and options. I actually sorta like it. Though I really do like the stock Launcher, I'm going to give Go Launcher EX a go. I'm really impressed in the speed and loads of preferences. If I were to give a thumbs up for a Launcher to be included with Shabby I would have to say Go Launcher EX. It's free and fun :)

I'm really new to all this. I'm having a hard time doing anything with the build.prop file.i can not edit or replace it. I have the new one ready to go. My phones rooted but the root explorers I've tried wil not edit the file. Thanks in advance

Extract the Build.prop from ShabbyMod. Place it somewhere on your SD card.

  1. Now using Root Explorer do these steps.
  2. Go to /system (you need to have root access)
  3. Scroll to the bottom and make a copy of your current build.prop. (hold down your finger on the file and a menu will popup. Select Copy.)
  4. Your going to have to select a place to copy it, try /mnt/sdcard/ or somewhere on your sdcard.
  5. Once you have a backup. Go to where you put your shabbymod build.prop.
  6. Hold down your finger again and select Copy.
  7. Navigate to /system
  8. Press the 'MOUNT R/W' button on the top right.
  9. Press the 'Copy Here' button on the top.
  10. It's going to ask you to overwrite. (Say YES, since we made a backup).
  11. Once the copying is finished. Power down and power up your phone (restart).
  12. If you did things correctly when you go to Settings -> About Phone -> it should list shabbymod at the bottom.
  13. Now you won't get anymore updates. Plus you have a few of the ShabbyMod fixes :)
  14. All credit goes to Shabby for his awesome mod. Thanks a lot for your contributions!

I just replaced the build.prop on my prevail (im also scared to flash the whole phone) and i notice a significant change in snappyness of the entire phone...increased for the better....:D thanks!!

i have done everything obvious, and the system folder says its set for r/w. but build.prop will not overwrite.

when i copy and paste the new one it says successful, but it doesnt change. I can press and hold and change permissions and it says successful.. but they dont change.

Nothing i do in the system folder changes.. any idea why?

EDIT:
Reinstall of RE fixed the issue.

Older versions of Root Explorer have issues doing the file copying process. Also I've heard that Root Explorer sometimes can corrupt and or mess up files while performing a copy. Though if I'm not mistaken the author said he fixed this within recent versions.

Quick question for ya Xruptor, the build.prop you used was it from shabbymod 7 or 6? Or does it even matter?

Just noticing a bit of a slow down since i've replaced it(mainly when the phone first boots)

To be honest the changes from the default Build.prop and the one from any version of Shabby's mod is VERY minimal at best. Only a few lines have been changed and the majority of the changes are actually added to the end of the file. He activates some features at the bottom ;)

As for slow down's, I haven't experienced any myself. Are you sure one of your apps isn't causing it?

Could be. I've noticed the lag clears up after the media scanner finishes so it could just be the SD card scan that's causing it.
