Stop & think!

I was under the impression that most if not all of Verizon's current 3G towers have simply been upgraded to 3G/4G towers by strapping on new antenna arrays and installing new base station equipment. Recycle the old tower by upgrading it.

That is more or less my understanding of is as well. The thing is, they still have the 3G equipment up there. They aren't going to just let it rot. They spent a ton of money on that equipment.

OTA's & Bloatware updates.
I set all my app to manual update. Yes, you can control it yourself. I have unlimited data and I never ever switch to WiFi. I manually update the app whenever I got the notification, using my broadband connection, and it does not use much data at all.

To the OP: Why should you get unlimited data? Do you get unlimited electricity, water, or gas?

lets just compare the internet, not the other utilities. i pay $28 a month for unlimited data that i have in my house. they are the ones that offered it to use to get our business now that they got it they want to take the very thing that got most people to switch from a regular phone to a smart phone. no matter how i figure it there family shared data plans will cost me money. i cant believe there will be many people who will save money. but thats why im not changing anything on my plan. thats just how it works out for me, wish it would have saved me some money but it wont.

I'm actually fine with metered data, though I will stay grandfathered on my unlimited plan for as long as I can. However, your gas AND electricity are metered on your utility bill and you pay for how much you actually use. What Verizon has done now with the Share Everything plan is MAKE you pay a flat rate for voice & texts, and then meter your data. The problem is that the flat rate for voice & texts is much higher than many of us are using on our current plans.

The bottom line is that Verizon wants to have their cake and eat it too! It's not enough that they start metering data (which we all knew was coming and is justified, in my mind). They had to take it a step further and FORCE the unlimited rate for voice & texts on those who don't need or want them. So many (not all) customers get screwed both ways: they get screwed because they now have to pay for metered data (and at $50 minimum for 1 GB of data), AND they get screwed because they have to pay $40/$30 per month for each phone no matter how many minutes or texts they use! It's especially grievous to those who have basic phones that have no need for data, or for those who have family members who don't need texting: you still have to pay $30 per basic phone no matter what.

And that may be the biggest issue, Verizon's new plans take away choice. All new customers starting on June 28th or later are, according to Verizon, teenage girls. They have basically told those looking for a basic plan to go somewhere else.
