Help Strange issue

I have a rooted Captivate with Lagfix. I haven't really done anything with root or anything like that yet. This morning I woke up to my phone going ridiculously slow despite there being no outside of the ordinary tasks running. So I rebooted the phone, and now when I turn it on, I see the "AT&T World Phone" logo and then whenever the Galaxy S Logo is supposed to come on, all I get is the Boot up sound and no picture. The screen stays blank and the soft keys light up and respond when I touch them. I can get the phone into recovery mode, I tried clearing user data/cache and reinstalling packages. When I reinstall packages, I get a message saying "cannot find update.zip".

Anyone have any suggestions? Maybe a way to do a hard reset? I have AT&T's warantee and I'll send it in if I have to. But when I hit clear user data, did it delete root?

I am running 2.1 Update 1 and have had the phone since September 2010. I use Advanced Task Killer. Before all of this happened, I had an issue with the wifi (Reason for rooting) which was fixed by deleting a file which was reinstalled after a reboot.

By doing the clear user data/cache you have deleted files on it thus you are unable to re-install packages. You can always revert back to stock using odin (just search the forums).

Hello all, I have a strange issue aswell. However, it is unrelated to the previous strange issue. Thanks to the info on this site I joined the rooted community in an attempt to make my phone a hotspot. I used the one-click method from unlockr.com which I'm sure is from xda. Anyhow, after I was rooted i went to location and security and unchecked "use GPS satellites" (just because). Once I did that my screen went black but the soft keys were still lit up. Also I was still connected to my computer and debug mode. After a few seconds my screen came back up as if it rebooted and when it was finished my usb icon to show that its connected to something now looks like the debug icon. So now when I connect my phone to something that icon shows up and if I connect in debug mode, 2 debug icons show up. Curious if anyone may know how or why that happened.

Part of your problem is installing a "lagfix" hack (which one did you install? There are dozens, and all have different levels of risk), and probably misuse of a task killer.

See the Captivate FAQ:

Lagfix - CapFAQ
Task killers - CapFAQ

My theory is that you installed the lagfix from OCLF, which is pretty much the most-dangerous and dirty one out there... this then made you a bigger target for something bad to go wrong, and it did, with the results more-catastrophic due to the complicated things OCLF does to your filesystem.

Likely you now have a corrupted phone.

A factory reset may or may not fix it, depending on what is corrupted. You should still have root after. If that doesn't work, your options are an Odin 1-click flash to "stock" (not really "stock), which will likely prevent you from ever receiving OTA updates, or doing an exchange for a new phone. But with OCLF you never would've wanted OTA updates anyhow.

If you can use Odin, I would even if you do an exchange, as well as a master clear, otherwise AT&T might detect you've hacked your phone and deny you your warranty.
