Help Strange Signal Stength Issue

mjolson5

Lurker
I just picked up 2 of the Optimus v's at Target yesterday - one for my wife and one for myself. Love it so far.

One strange thing I found is that side by side, full charge, same setup, one phone shows 5-6 bars and the other shows only 1.

When I make or receive a call on that phone the signal suddenly jumps up to 5-6 bars, then back down when the call ends.

Any ideas? Could it be a defective phone?

Check what signal strength both phones have. You can see the dBm number in Settings>About Phone>Status>Signal Strength

The bars don't refresh as fast as the dBm number.

I quickly noted:
-100dBm = 2 bars, -97dBm = 3, -94dBm anywhere from 3 to 4 bars, -90dBm or lower = 5 bars. The lower the number, the better the signal.

This is due to the phone switching from 3G to 1Rxtt when a voice call is placed/received. You will get a higher voice signal rating while on 1rxtt than when on 3G and then after the call disconnects it goes back to 3G.
