Root Struggling to root running Gingerbread

Lurker
Hi guys,

Sorry that my first post is one of a technical nature but I could do with some advice on how to root my Desire which is running the HTC Devs Gingerbread update.

I've tried the method of Gingerbreak and unrEVOked but both to no avail, and have had a search through the net and I couldn't find anything specific to the original Desire.

Can anyone offer any advice or point me in the direction of a solution please?

Many thanks
Andy :)

Fastboot a custom recovery (I use amon ra as my sd card isent compatible with clockwork mod), use ANDROID FLASHER which you will find in SUROOT ( the person above my post) in his signature on rooting it is a subsection, ignore the adb bit and go to fastboot.

Once you have flashed a custom recovery, go into it (hold volume down and power on phone and when the options come up select RECOVERY), now at this point if you havent copied a ROM to your sd card then you need to do that first, if your rom is on there choose 'install zip from sdcard and select the one you want.

In order for all this to work your phone must be S-OFF, which is done using the tool off revolutionary.io

Hope that helps, im now running gingervillain this way

Thanks for the help guys :)

I managed to root it with Revolutionary but i was trying to install a rooted Official Froyo rom which didnt include a radio rom so it wouldn't install (even after i installed a radio rom) so in the end i headed over to shipped-roms and installed the standard 2.2 HTC rom.

Will attempt another root though as i really want APP2SD.

that was very silly

read our guides

you didnt post what didnt work and what it was doing. we would have been able to fix it for you

Not silly at all thanks. Unfortunately it was 12:00am by the time i had rooted it last night so i didn't fancy staying up any longer tbh.

I was following various guides off XDA Devs with regards to unrEVOked and Gingerbreak (obviously it wouldn't work) and just played it by ear for Revolutionary.

I successfully rooted with Revolutionary and placed the radio rom and rooted Froyo rom onto the SD card. Rebooted in recovery and installed the radio rom from the SD. I then rebooted and went back into recovery and tried to install the rooted Froyo rom where it failed giving the reason that no radio could be found.

Its not like I cant root it again right? Should be easier now i can follow the guide to the T for using unrEVOked.

you cant root android using unrevoked 2.3 read what i said thats all you need to do

If you've used revolutionary already you will have a modern alpharev hboot. That's why you were able to run the Froyo RUU. It also means you will still have fastboot and S-Off.

So no need to root. Fastboot flash a custom recovery and then you can flash ROMs, or root the current one as described in the revolutionary wiki.

Just as Jibba says

i would urge him to read our guides as judging by what i see in his posts the op just tries stuff.
weve seen many people in a mess including jibba due to not understanding what that are just doing and just "and just played it by ear" as the op put

im not trying to be mean Andy. we dont want you messing up your device further and it can be done easily if you do things without understanding it

hi.
didn't think you had to mess around with radio normally :-\

I think the same to be honest. If it works absolutely fine (for your needs anyway) I don't see the point in risking it. Just one slip up and you could have a rather lovely looking brick.

Although I feel confident in doing it (via Recovery or Android Flasher) I just simply have no need to. I'll leave it to the pro's. :)

Yes, good advice.

Most messes are recoverable, but still best avoided. Some mistakes will leave you with a brick. Understanding what you are doing is the key to avoiding either.
