Help Stuck 3g down arrow

Anyone ever encounter this?
It happens to me every so often.
There will be no internet connection, and after a few minutes it will have a circle instead of signal bars then seem to self-correct.
When it happens it lasts 2-3 minutes.

During this time there is no internet access, obviously.
Going into the super secret menu (*#*#4636#*#*) and hitting the 'run ping test' button gives me an IOException error when it's in this state.

Battery pulls fix it faster... tried SBFing and resets but it still happens on occasion.
Time to get another X?

It happened to me once. Usually enabling and disabling airplane mode fixes it for me. If it keeps happening I'd give VZW support a call

Happens to me all the time, and pisses me off! Usually going into airplane mode doesn't work because the whole data part is frozen, and when it comes out of airplane mode the data just doesn't turn back on.

I usually have to reboot...

It usually happens during tethering for me, but through other things too. UHG.

Ive been paying more attention to this and when it's in this lethargic mode I can make and receive calls.
The calls are not dropped when it self corrects either..
When it's like this I notice that there is always 1 bar of signal and when it 'resets' it jumps to 4 bars.
Tower handoff issue perhaps?
