Stuck on Google - hairdryer started it!

Some of you might have heard of it but I was desperate and tried it. After the 3rd time it worked! My Nexus S got past the Google screen and booted up.

After getting ICS 4.0.3 a month ago OTA whenever I would shut off my phone it would take 15 or so battery pulls to get it to boot. Once it boots it goes into a 15 minute reboot cycle then it is ok to use. Well yesterday it froze for the first time. Battery pulls were not working so I started searching the web. I am unrooted and didn't want to root. I was expecting to return the phone today until I found a few threads about people using a hairdryer to get their phones to boot. So I pulled the battery and gave it a try. The first 2 times I got nothing. The third time worked. I kept the heat on for about a minute. I know this is not a fix but I can't be without my phone for this coming week. Next week I will give rooting a try.

I think you should probably exchange the phone anyway. That is not normal behavior for a working device. It's possible you have a bad battery or a bad connection somewhere in the phone. Heating up the battery will slightly raise its voltage output. If it wasn't reaching an adequate voltage before, that slight increase might make it enough to boot. Still, not normal. Definitely exchange the phone if you're still withing the exchange period.

Yes as soon as I can part with it for a few days I will bring it in. I need it this week for travel. When I used the dryer I had the battery out and holds a charge good. It is very strange because I never had the issue until
I got the OTA update to 4.0.3 in fact I hed to reboot after the update.

It's possible that the new kernel in 4.0.3 is less forgiving when it comes to input voltages (or more demanding), causing it to crash. In all likelihood, simply getting a new battery would probably fix your problem, but there's no point in taking that gamble if you can simply exchange the phone.

That's a good point. Maybe I'll have them (Best Buy) try a new battery first off. I'll post next week when I take it back.

Well it finally died last week. Took it to Best Buy and getting a replacement. Not sure if I'll get a referb or not. We'll see.

The Nexus S has been out long enough that refurbs are very likely. It's only the newly released stuff that brand now OOTB devices are exchanged. ;)

Of course there is the begging and martini lunch option, could get you a new one. :D

I got my new (refurb) Nexus S last night. Not bad turnaround from Best Buy, just 2 days. I get it home and first thing I do is check the OS and what do I see, 2.3.............not 2.3.3, or 2.3.4 or even 2.3.6. WTF!! so i click on the System update notification. ICS 4.0.3. Oh well I'll give it another try. Update went very smooth. I have tried multiple reboots after the install and everything seems stable. WIFI works and nothing out of the ordinary so far. Got my fingers crossed.
