stuck on x

Hey guys, I'm sure this has been covered, but I haven't found a good solution. I have a coworkers nexus 7. She was going to throw it away because it will not boot up, its just stuck on the x animation. I told her that its impossible to 'brick' modern smart phones/tablets due to software, and that I'd take a crack at it. Within the first ten minutes I had it in the boot loader menu, got into the recovery menu, wiped everything, did a factory reset and.... Still no dice. It just sits at the x. There are various toolkits one can use from PC which sound awesome, however step one is always to enable USB debugging on the device. Seeings how I can't turn the device on, I can't enable USB debugging... I've tried and failed to install ota updated via sideload, and suspect the reason I can't get that to work is again because I am unable to enable USB debugging mode. If anyone has any suggestions that would be awesome, I hate to return this in an unworking condition, because I'm sure she is just going to pitch it!

Im no good with this kind of thing but i think i remember reading that you can enter a command to turn on debugging(?)
So dont give up until one of the clever dudes has chimed in.
Good luck

You don't need USB debugging on to do things from fastboot.

Personally I'd reflash the stock factory image from fastboot. I'm on my way to work now but can probably get some links and instructions up within a few hours

As Rxpert83 already stated, you do not have to be in USB debug to restore a factory image.

Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit can make it about as easy as pie.

It's important that you use a good quality USB cable during this process, and always plug the device directly into the computer. Do not use a USB hub. You should also not have any other android device plugged into the computer.

Nexus Root Toolkit v1.8.0 | WugFresh

Get Wugs NRT and install it. Once installed it will ask you to select a device. This is the most important step and probably the only thing you can do to mess it up.

Select the Nexus 7 tablet depending if it's wifi or has mobile data.

The Nexus 7 V2 is for the newer N7, if the tablet has a camera on the back it's the V2.

Then select the highest version of android 4.4. You will get a prompt on how to turn on USB debugging, ignore it.

Once NRT is ready to go, Click the full driver installation guide. You generally do not have to do anything on the 1st tab, that is really if you have been messing around with other drivers. Tab 2 will give you a suggested driver package, install the package it recommends. Close the driver install guide.

Now click the button for "Flash Stock + Unroot" with the Soft Bricked/BootLoop option.

Follow the instructions, put the tablet into bootloader, and connect it to the computer. The first time you connect it wait a minute for the device to be installed and then proceed when complete.

It's actually far easier to actually do then to read on how to do it, trust me.

Report back the results or if you have anymore questions.

ok so, got it up and running, ive tried this program before, but with no success. this time, what i did differently was paid super attention to step 1. i just deleted any drivers that seemed remotely involved with anything. then went on to the 'flash stock + unroot' phase. failed, a bunch of things seemed to be wrong, but there were several things said something about device being locked. so i tried the unlock option, then tried the 'flash stock + unroot' option again, and it took much longer, and everything seemed to work! so, thanks for the help!! as far as i can tell the device is working 100%, did several reboots with no problems! thanks again for the walkthru!

Yeah when i rooted i followed step 1 very carefully, probably uninstalled more things than i had to lol but it went really smoothly after that :)
