Root Suggestion for a sticky

Please forgive me if this is out there somewhere already, (and if so, point me to it!) but I would love a sticky that lists exactly when you need to wipe what.
I am still pretty much a noob, even though I have rooted 3 phones, and I never really know when I need to wipe everything, when I can just wipe the caches, when I need to wipe data, etc.....
Would also be useful to know when you need to include the different parts of a nandroid backup.

Thanks!

Hello karenmolloy!
Are you talking about when it is time to flash a rom, what can be wiped? Or what to wipe when just flashing a kernel, or some other .zip flash in recovery.?

I am not clear on your last sentence though :(

Sorry, what I meant was when is it necessary to flash which things. Like when you are flashing a new ROM for the first time, you need to wipe everything. When you are flashing a new kernel, you need to wipe.... first. When you are flashing an update of the ROM, you need to wipe.... When your phone is going bonkers and you must have messed something up, you need to wipe....

FOr the nandroid backup thing, it might just be in the recovery version I have but there is a bunch of check boxes-- backup system, data, sdcard, sd ext, etc...
Wanted to know when to choose which if these.
Does that clarify? I find that I tend to do it all every time to be safe, but think i am wasting my time sometimes.

I think I follow ya:)
Most of the time, however not always, in the rom's op, it will tell you what to wipe before a flash.
Same goes for the kernel's op. Again, most of the time, but not always.

As a general rule of thumb, for the Evo, before a rom flash, I wipe everything 3 times.
Bear in mind you should never, and I know you know this, wipe the sd card itself. :)
Do I think wiping 3 times is a waste of time? No, it only adds perhaps a minute to the flashing process.
(fwiw, the recovery, Smelkus, is imo, the best recovery for this device--I am, by no means, saying Amon-Ra is not good..it is...but Smelkus is based off of Amon with a few more options) :)

For a kernel flash, it varies kernel to kernel, but wipe cache and dalvik, then flash the kernel. Some kernels recommend a cache/dalvik after the flash and before the reboot. (in recovery of course)

For a phone acting wonky, wipe cache and dalvik, then reboot.

For a nandroid backup, at least check off the boxes (if my memory serves me correctly)--data/system/boot/wimax. (I save a copy on the computer also). I also check off the boxes that say sd-ext and .android_secure. Forgive me, it's been a while since I made a nandroid on the Evo. :)

And, always make a nandroid before any type of flashing:)

One more thing, I do not use any sort of app to flash things such as rom manager and the like.
I choose to do it all via recovery.

Some of these things you may know and I'm sorry if I am stating the obvious, but others may see this thread too :D

Welcome Karenmolloy! Good to see people from my area on this forum.

Everything Mike said was spot on. Also, which recovery do you have? Smelkus or Amon RA is recommended. Clockwork Mod is very inconsistent and not really recommended for the EVO 4G.

I have Amon RA. :-)

not to mention that there is the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html. check out the 2nd post as it has all the info you will need(well most of the basic stuff) to flash roms, kernels and more.

let me know if you think i should add more info to it.

Thanks! I had seen that post when I was rooting, but it ended up not working for me because my phone was running a newer version of HBOOT, so I never read through the whole thread.
Will definitely need to go back and check out that second post!

Forgive me, my brain got a little jumbled... I had HBOOT 2.18 and DID use the Revised post you linked to above. I was thinking about Revolutionary that didn't work because of the version of HBOOT on the phone!

(I did get stuck for quite a while somewhere in the second step- after unlocking and getting S-OFF but before I was actually rooted. I think that was the time that I realized that I couldn't connect the phone via usb hub to the computer. Pretty sure i wasn't able to use Revolutionary tool after getting to HBOOT 2.10. -- maybe only allowed for 2.15 or 2.16 when I went to use it? Then, I found another guide on XDA but that required using unrevoked, and their site was gone. SO I ended up finding some really old rooting guide and using that instead.)

But your guide was incredibly helpful and useful. :thumb:

ok got it....LOL well i'm glad you got s-off. i do need to change it so that i have revolutionary used instead. hmmmmmm maybe this weekend i will edit the guide to point to revolutionary. i'm a little sad that the unrevoked team took down their files and support.....oh well.
