support: odin download failed

Hi,

I tried flashing the TWRP recovery to my phone using Odin. I got a big red "FAIL" box in Odin, tried again, and now Odin just comes up saying "<OSM> All threads completed (succeed 0 / failed 0)". The message that was coming up previously (as in immediately after the big red "FAIL" box showed up) had several lines (I didn't write them all down, and now they're gone), but at the bottom said something about "succeed 0 / failed 1". Now my phone displays the odin mode screen and says "Downloading... Do not turn off target !!"

I don't know why, but obviously the flash failed and I can't get it to restart. My bigger concern is whether it is safe to restart my phone. What do I need to do (if anything) to avoid bricking my phone?

fyi, I was running the stock Telus Android 4.1.2 update, fwiw

Thanks

Took a chance and just restarted my phone, looks like all is OK!

Now I need to figure out why it failed in the first place, I may be back here tomorrow night.

Welcome to the forum vinyyc :ciao:

When in a position like that just pull the battery and restart. It could have been one of several reasons, bad connection between the phone and computer is usually the culprit. Make sure your usb port is clean and the cable is good.

Finally got around to trying this again, but I'm still not having luck getting past the very first couple steps... as a recap of what I'm doing and seeing...

I've downloaded the files (Odin, TWRP, CWM Superuser). Placed Odin and CWM in a folder on my computer, TWRP in the root folder of my phone's SD card.

Start up Odin, all appears normal. USB cable plugged in to computer but not phone.

Hold volume down and power button, then plug in USB cable to phone. Sometimes (and I'm not sure why it isn't consistent), I get the windows pop-ups in the bottom right corner of my screen indicating that new hardware has been found and is being installed, drivers that come up are msm8x60, samsung usb (something, it hasn't come up again, and I didn't type fast enough to get the whole name), gadget serial control and samsung mobile usb modem. Anyway, whether those hardware install bubbles come up or not, Odin eventually shows the com port as yellow. However, when I click pda and try to select the file on my SD card, I discover that the computer cannot find my phone. Usually, drives F: and G: are my phone and SD card, but they don't appear in the odin list, nor in "My Computer". I've tried using each of the six usb ports on my computer, but none seem to work.

Outside of that problem, screens on my phone correspond with what I'm seeing posted in the "Root & ROM guide" forum.

Any ideas? I'm running WinXP if it's any help, on a dual core 2.66GHz cpu, I don't think it's THAT old, but could that be the problem?

The TWRP .tar file needs to be on your computer, not the SD card. The superuser file should be on your SD card although you shouldn't need that if you are on jellybean 4.1.2. Check the instructions again for rooting with twrp and jellybean. Read the last post in the guide.

sorry, I got all of my acronyms confused... the superuser file is on my SD card (still zipped, should it be?), odin and twrp are on my computer... I think I was getting hung up (and confusing myself) with CWM superuser and the clockworkmod (which I was also associating as CWM) recovery... I'll give it a try again tonight..

There was a time I was very good at following detailed instructions.. I don't know what happened (and I'm quite embarassed to realize my slip up).

Thanks for your help.
