Root swap partition

When ever I partition the sdcard it gives the option of installing a swap partition.

I know that my ubuntu installation on my laptop installs a swap partition when I installed the operating system.

Would there be any benefit for installing a swap partition on the sd card?

It was used with some custom ROMs that I don't even think are in development any more.

For any of the current ROMs you do not need swap space, it will only shorten the life of your memory card.

Wasn't it for compache or something like that?

But yeah, swap partitions aren't needed now.
