Sweeter Home 2 beta

Tried it for about 20 minutes and it froze up my phone 3 times :(
I will wait for some more feedback and a longer run until I try it again.
Then again, I do love the power strip on Home++, it would be hard to get the multi functions and compact(ness) out of something else.
If you used it, you would know what I mean.

Joe that's definitely a, uhh, sweeter home app than mine (Home++).
I played with SH last week, but got frustrated with it. I couldn't figure out wth everyone was raving about.
-Now I'm inspired to investigate further.

I tried the beta2 for the second time last night and sorry to say I had to reinstall beta 1. Beta 2 was just too unstable. Maybe because I have a Graphic intensive layout with many picture blocks there was a problem. Anyway Beta 1 is running great and since I am past the design stage will use it until Beta 3.

LOL :D Do you see the five icons at the bottom of my homepage? Those could be resized to be as small as your "power strip" icons. I just choose to have them bigger. And I could put any app or shortcut that I want there. Can you? No so much.

Hear this: There is only ONE, I repeat, ONE feature that Home++ has over Sweeter Home. And that's the ability to hide the Notification bar. But the benefits to Sweeter Home are almost infinite. And I happen to like the Notification bar. ;)

Yes, editing in Sweeter Home is difficult at first. And, it does have some bug (i.e. error reports, FCs, etc.). But once it is up and running, it is snappy, smooth, quick, and efficient. One looks at my pic tells you that.

When I first installed beta 2, my theme acted really weird. But I hung in there for maybe 15 minutes or so, and it just kinda "fixed itself". Maybe it had to recreate XML files or something ... I dunno. All I do now is that the above theme couldn't run under beta 1. In fact, this theme now has several more screens than the one that couldn't run under beta 1.

By the way, all my widgets are working flawlessly.

Just sayin'...

Joe:

Sorry to say that wasn't my experience. Hanging in on Beta 1 waiting for Beta 3.

Yeah, that notification bar, well, it notifies me. Definitely not a reason not to toss SH, IMO.
-Having FC & lock issues with it (...or any other app, for that matter) when others are clearly not tells me that the problem may be another app interacting with it.
Maybe if those having such issues could list what services are always running in the BG, etc, you could narrow it down. But until you figure it out for yourself(ves), I doubt a 3rd beta is gonna help your problem.
-Sure, maybe it's too much effort for most apps to go chasing the problem, but even if you haven't gotten this one working, you have to admit that it's configurability is quite impressive and far beyond the vast majority of apps available to us.
I'll play when I have more time, but I do see myself purchasing this one.

Maybe I won't wait - I will clean up my setup a bit and test it out. I may put it on the backburner until I am out of school, because I know myself...

And Eff You for re-selling me on an app that I really don't have time for (but will now make time for :) )
DOH!

My big problem was where you had a widget you couldn't swipe to a different home screen. You could only swipe to move home screens on an area of your current home screen that was blank.

Is this fixed? If so I'll have to give it a shot again. The blurry icons and widgets not updating were the only other 2 issues I had with the first build that made me uninstall.

thx.

The blurry icons are only if you first add them and the need to be refreshed. Killing SH fixes that every time, or rebooting. That's been my experience anyway.

Yes, all of my widgets are working.

I can swipe across widgets, no problem. (I just tested this.) You cannot swipe across a springboard however. But I don't consider that a flaw ... it's just the way it is. With this app being so easy to minimize trays and what-not, it's just not an issue if one gets creative.

Okay cool. Ill have to give it a try again. Springboard is fine but my problem was I had the homescreen full of widgets so I had no way to swipe to different screens. Also not a big deal, but before the top homescreen (swipe up) did not have the wallpaper background it was just black. I don't care b/c I just had that set as a dedicated app tray but did it get fixed?

I really liked that I could springboard my contacts and incoming sms. Maybe in future builds they'll add contact pics to the contact springboard.

This has become my new favorite game. lol
It's going to take a long time to get it just right.
Like Joomla for your Droid.

Hey, it took me DAYS to get my theme just the way I like it. And I'm still tweaking it. The only difference now is, tweaking things take a 1/10th the time.

By the way, hate to throw this at you, but it's for your own good. Try to use "tagged" trays as much as possible. They rock. And they make things way mo better in the long run.

I'll try to check back from time to time if you have questions. The least I can do since I'm pushing this app so much. :o

+1

Very well said and I totally agree after giving it a try. I've tried all the other home screens and did like home ++ but it lagged too much for my liking.

This is the first that actually gave me the controls to organize the phone the way I want it. I usually don't buy into hype but this lives up to it IMO. I use the business theme and won't go back till 2.1 is released and even then this homescreen will probably make it back onto my Droid.

And even with all the bells and whistles, the Droid hasn't slowed down.

Thank you Joe for getting me n board with this. I went through a ton of posts on here and you have me convinced with Sweeter Home 2.

I just uploaded my first Theme. In theme's search "bmansfinal" without quotes of course.

I took me 2 and half days to get it. It is a final copy, though I will be tweaking my personal one still.

I have found that Tagged Trays is much much much more stable than CustomTrays....go with Tagged...they are customizable anyways.

If you have the pure messenger...and its not showing... Go to 'Edit Theme'
Long Press pure messenger widget that says 'Data Loading' press 'Edit' Go to 'Configure'...configure to your liking..then press back once... then 'Layer Level'....Dont change it just press it..the image in the top right will change and then back al lthe way out and End editing....Voila!!!

No problem buddy. Once you "get it", I don't see how any home-replacement app can do what Sweeter Home does. I stumbled upon Sweeter Home on YouTube (the older version), but I saw the potential instantly. And I could wait for Preview 2 to be released. It is not perfect, but what is? The editing takes a bit to understand. But it can only get better/easier/faster from here. I a loves my theme. :)

You should upload it. :)

I tried it last night. I couldn't get it to work without constantly crashing on me. I couldn't even setup 1/2 of one screen before I got too frustrated and uninstalled it. I'd be almost done customizing one thing and it'd crash and I'd have to start all over again.

I take it you didn't have this problem? It literally took me 15 mins to set up 4 springboard buttons and I didn't even have anything attached to them yet.

I have my wallpaper for the left/right/center screen and that's fine.
For the top and bottom screens I set a different picture to cover the full screen for a wallpaper so it's not black. Is there another way to do it? It didn't work very well, and wouldn't always render the whole pic. There'd be a little square in the corner and the rest would be black.

I guess I'll install it again and give it another shot today.

Edit: I still can't swipe to another screen on top of places that have widgets. Only blank areas. How do you add your widgets Joe? menu button>edit theme>new>system widget?

If you don't mind, I might take a crack at this problem...

The Wallpaper: Did you set up the wallpaper while switching between landscape mode and regular? If you did, try to set it up regularly without switching to landscape...You have the option to create a different screen just by putting into landscape mode. (e.g. you can set up a home screen the regular way (vertically) and then turn your phone to landscape and set up a whole different homescreen, so that everytime you go to landscape or regular you get two different screens.)

Swiping to another page on a Widget: This probably due to the Layers of the homescreen. As of now, it is not allowed to switch screens if swiped on a widget, you need atleast a little space. I have already gotten used to it, but maybe they wil lchange it for the Market version.

As for the crashing... I dunno about Joe, but I had to clear my native screen of all widgets, install SH2, restart, and then spent a ton of time figuring out and building my theme. I had had your problem, it was due to low internal memory, after I cleared everything and did the restart though..it was golden... I still get a FC every now and then, but the more I tweak with it, and learn from my mistakes, the better its getting. The only persisting problem is 'Custom Trays', they havent worked for more than a few minutes before a bitmap error comes up...never had a problem with Tagged trays or springboards.

Am I the only one that thinks it would be 100 times easier to modify the theme on the computer, then download it to the phone? Like something that shows all 5 screens at once on your computer, then you can move stuff around with the mouse, which would be way more accurate than a finger. Doubt it'll happen, but that's probably the only way I could use this home.

I downloaded SHP2 yesterday and after all day of customizing it force closed and i ended up uninstalling it after 10 times my phone restarting.. :( I really loved that theme..
