Swipe entry learn

Swipe entry looks extremely intimidating. How long does it take to learn it? If it takes over a month, that's too much.?

Also, what was wrong with regular typing?

It seems as if Google is just abusing long-time android users.

Can you recommend a new phone without all this complicated (useless) stuff?

Swipe entry has been around almost as long as Android. It wasn't invented by Google, though many years later they added it as an option to their own keyboard.

I've never found it useful (perhaps because I'm a touch typist on real keyboards), but since you can turn it off it's also never bothered me. If you don't want it then go into your keyboard's settings and turn it off, or install a different keyboard. By the same token you can add it to any android phone by installing a keyboard with the feature. It's silly to get worked-up and throw words like "abuse" around for trivia like this.

Thanks for the quick reply. I really appreciate it.
I have found on several authoritative websites that I believe were written by industry professionals, that Google has unilaterally decided to eliminate the option to turn off both swipe typing and gesture navigation in Android 9. I'm sorry I don't have any specific url listing at this point. Of course, I could be wrong but I don't think so.
Please don't be too hard on me, not that I believe you have been. I am a significantly disabled Parkinson's disease patient with serious tremors in my hands. I am not a troll or Android detractor. Thanks again for your help.

Here's my details:

LG stylo 5
Android 9
Boost wireless
Which is Sprint network
SwiftKey keyboard app

Yes, I have tried to turn off the following items from both the UI in Chrome browser and within the swiftkey app. The menus have been changed and no longer have the same menu options as described on the websites I have checked.
Either there is no equivalent menu option or the present Android 9 user interface has been changed to disallow these changes.

Please prove otherwise - - That's all I'm asking.

Primarily concerns:
Radical changes to UI from Android 8 to Android 9.
Specifically, utility of swipe entry for text and it's impact upon the motor-impaired disabled community to use smartphones. And the apparent removal of the clients ability to turn off the feature.

Suitability and utility of swipe navigation for the motor impaired.

I have contacted both Google and LG support.

Thanks for the continued expert attention.

I'm using android 10 now, after using android 9 for a year, and have swipe typing disabled. And I'm using a Pixel, so if Google had done such a thing I'd have been among the first to find out. So I think we can conclude that those android websites are much less authoritative than they would like you to believe ;).

Here is the setting to turn it off in GBoard (which calls it "glide" typing). This is Google's keyboard:

SwiftKey (which was never Google, and is currently owned by Microsoft) calls it "flow" typing. They don't let you turn off gestures completely, but you can turn off gesture typing as here (and it takes such a substantial swipe to activate these others, to the extent that I'd forgotten that they even existed). Here is the actual setting (from SwiftKey's "typing" settings):

If you find that the delete word/hide keyboard gestures in SwiftKey (nothing to do with android 9 by the way) are a problem for you then just change keyboard. But there is definitely no system change that forces swipe typing in Android 9 (or not android 9 itself: I don't have an LG so don't know what they've done, but I don't see how the OS could change the behaviour of the keyboard app).

I've used swype since it debuted as an independent company and have loved it. I find it faster than typing. I don't feel abused by google, at least regarding swype. I believe the truth is that different people like different thing. I love swype, you don't. That's how the world turns. Some people like android, some people like iOS. .. some people even like both. Choices are a good thing! I like choices. I find the lack of choice abusive! Happy New Year.

i love swype!!!!!!!!!!! been using it since it came out. at the time my friends with apple devices were all jealous of me. i cant deal with just straight up typing on a virtual keyboard....to each their own.

I can't deal with straight typing with my thumbs, either. I don't see how young people type so fast with just thumbs. I find it weird.

Yeah trying typing with thumbs on the note 10+!!!!!! Lol

I know there's a feature you can turn on for one handing the note 10+, but I don't like to use it.
