Root Switching Recovery

I've been using TWRP 1.1.1 recovery and thinking about switching to the 4ext touch recovery. Do I have to uninstall the TWRP 1.1.1 before downloading 4ext?

Someone with knowledge please help me out. I don't wanna blindly downloading the 4ext and try to install it without knowing if there are risks since I have TWRP installed. Thanks!

You don't have to uninstall TWRP since the 4EXT app (free Recovery Updater or paid Recovery Control) will flash the 4EXT recovery program over TWRP. However, since the nandroid backups made with TWRP are not compatible with 4EXT you should keep a copy of the TWRP 1.1.1 .img file in the same directory on your PC as ADB/fastboot so if you need to use TWRP 1.1.1 you can boot it without flashing it by issuing the following command:

fastboot boot recovery.img (where recovery.img is the name of your TWP 1.1.1 recovery file)

It's definitely a big upgrade to 4EXT from TWRP 1.1.1 and I think you will really like it, but if you don't there is always TWRP2 (touch) 2.4.1.0. ;)

One thing you need to know:

TWRP backups are NOT compatible with 4EXT. So that's out of the way...

You can just fastboot the recovery.img. That's all there is to do! But like I said. TWRP and 4EXT are not compatible with nandroids...so that may or may not change your mind.

Thank you RamJet! I will follow your advice and keep the TWRP where it is on my PC (just in case) :D

Which recovery are you using? Which one works best in your opinion? 4ext or the TWRP 2?

What If i just upgrade to TWRP2? Would it be able to restore nandroids I made using TWRP 1.1.1?

I've been using 4EXT pretty much since the touch version became available for the Evo 3D, and I've been very comfortable with it. There's a comparison linked from this post that might be of interest, and I keep multiple recovery .img files in my ADB/fastboot directory but usually have the latest 4EXT version flashed.

4EXT is compatible with CWM and not TWRP, but I'm really not sure what the compatibility is between different versions of TWRP.

So, I downloaded 4ext. Flashed and then made a nandroid of my current ROM. The backup was created and saved in "clockworkmod" folder. Is that the way it does it?

I love it. It's much easier than having to use the volume keys to navigate in the old TWRP 1.1.1. :D

Yes that is where it puts it

I been getting bootloops using the 4ext latest RC9. Viper3d boot into the boot animation and just reboots. Same with AndroidParanoid. That's after I've done format everything except sdcard. Rebooting after flashing from inside the recovery is causing bootloops to me. I never had that problem with TWRP 1.1.1. Should I power down the phone, let it sit for a bit and then reboot?

Make sure you have "S-ON: 4EXT SmartFlash" unchecked in settings/recovery in the app. You can temporarily disable it in the tools menu of the recovery.

i have it disable. im worried now. im on hboot eng 1.04. i remember those roms boot fine with the old twrp 1.1.1 recovery

Suspecting that Eng Hboot might be causing some problems with 4ext. Gonna flash Jbear 1.50 and see what happens.

Make sure to wipe cache+dalvik after changing bootloaders and confirm again that SmartFlash is disabled before flashing a ROM again.

still bootloops. im gonna have to switch recovery
That's really odd.

Plenty of 3D/V users have been successful with 4EXT using both the 1.04 and 1.50.5050 hboots.

I don't know what else you can try at this point short of flashing the RUU, so you might as well try going back to TWRP 1.1.1 first.

could it be because i have not format my sdcard? i could move all files to comp format everything includingg sdcard using 4ext then move those files back?

I don't think so. I'm always trying different recoveries by booting them from fastboot and I've never had to format my SD card unless it showed as corrupted on my PC, and that happened mostly when I had an intermittent USB cable.

Okay I'm gonna try the new twrp v2. and if that won't play nice with my phone then I'll have to go back to twrp 1.1.1

TWRP 2.4.1 works too. I think what I have to do is flash recovery through adb instead of downloading the apk and install. That has caused problems for me. gonna try to flash 4ext through adb and see if that will work.
