Root Switching ROMs

greattry

Lurker
I've bought a HTC desire HD unlocked but with orange UK bloatware on.I've not yet transfered any data/contacts/apps etc onto it.

I successfully rooted it by following the xda-developers.com thread on AAHK.
I then took a backup using Titanium Backup.
I then backed the SD card onto my PC.

Then I successfully installed LeeDrOiD_HD_V5.0.0. The phone didn't recognise the SIM work but I found that theirs a patch available to sort that problem.
However I don't really like LeeDroid too much so rather then try patch it I was wanting to put Android Revolution HD 7.0.4. onto it.

It has taken me ages to read up and get this far without bricking the phone but now I'm stuck in a sea of conflicting advice, where the more I read the confusing it gets.
Not sure if to restore to factory settings , just install new ROM over it, or try Rom Manager or back to titanium or something else.
Can someone help me on what is the easiest and safest way to get rid of leedroid and install revolution. Thanks

if it's the same procedure for the desire, place rom on sd card

boot to recovery

nandroid backup

full wipe/factory reset

install zip from card

reboot.....voila!

Of course i'm not sure if it's the same for desire hd, but this is how recovery works.
Have you got clockwork mod recovery? if yes then do as above. Most recoveries are basically the same though.

Yes thanks for the reply.

I do have clockwork mod recovery. 5.0.2,7
So do I place my new ROM on the SD card, they open CMR.
Am I correct that nandroid back up is the one in CMR that says 'back up and restore' ?
Do I need to wipe cache partition also?
Also is worth patching the leeroid to get a working phone before switching ROMs? (just in case)

yes, put rom on sd card.

yes your correct, backup in cwm is a nandroid backup.

Don't have to wipe cache as a full wipe will do this.

As, for patching leedroid, it's up to you. I would personally before you nandroid so you can just restore a fully working rom your happy with if things do go wrong. Just make sure you have a backup in place.

Thanks again Shauny for your help and patience -greatly appreciated.
One last question on patching, My plan is now to take a backup on titanium pro before i do the patch .
I've added the patch to SD card. Should I delete the original update.zip ( which has the leeroid Romon it) then rename the patch as update.zip then use CMD in normal way. Is this the correct way to do it.

As far as I am aware, you shouldn't have to rename anything, or delete the old one (although you can if you want), I would think you just put the Zipped patch on the root of your SD card and flash it in CWM.

Please correct me if I am wrong anyone.

There are a lot of walkthroughs out there that say to rename the ROM 'update.zip' but you are correct, there is no need to rename the ROM. It might be an old relic from the early days of the phone or something

Just read that post, you just flash leedroid, then flash the patch after from recovery. So I would install leedroid, then the patch, then take a nandroid backup.

Firstly, you need to download the rom and the super wipe from the xda website for Android Revolution 7.0.4.... Also you know where to find these.
Make appropriate back ups in titanium Backup, and I would recommend creating a Titanium Backup. Zip in the menu.... That way you can restore your apps without having to sign into your Google account.

Next step is to reboot your phone into recovery. You can use rom Manager for this but u recommend pressing restart and then holding down the vol down button, just before the phone starts so that you enter a screen with little green android men on skateboards. Using the volume buttons, navigate and enter recovery.

From here install the super wipe, and then the actual rpm. Afterwards, once it's finished flashing, you can also install the titanium Backup zip if you made one.

I would recommend using 4ext touch recovery for this, for which installation guides can be found online easily.

EDIT: Ok.... when I wrote this , there were no other posts exactly saying what I just wrote.. :(
