Switching to T-Mobile and Vibrant

Cali

Newbie
I decided to switch to t-mobile from sprint. I chose t-mobile over att & verizon because it's cheaper and they have a nice selection of android phones.

My question is what andoid phone is the best for tech savvy people? I wish to install a custom rom for best performance and get the best out of the phone CPU. I really need a good texting phone with a gps and that's about it. Maybe HD 720p recording but I think they all have that?

Is the vibrant the way to go? Or the G2? Or what? (Mytouch 4g doesn't look like it'd operate well under a custom rom because of that genius button or whatever.)

What android phone would be the best for me?

Thank youuu.

I decided to go with the vibrant. If anyone thinks I am making a mistake please post before I get back from my class! Thanks. =)

good luck with the Vibrant's GPS, it has lots of issues. I would stick with the MT4G or G2, if you want to root/rom it, Cyanogenmod is avaliable for both, and is one of the best ROMs for Android you can find.

Welll... Maybe a GPS isn't something I really needed. Is Cyanogenmod available for the vibrant?

If you're going with T-Mo and you want a tech-savvy phone, why not go with a Nexus S?
Nexus S doesn't shoot HD video. :(

me personally...GPS is much more important than "HD" video on a phone. my evo shoots "HD" and im putting "HD" in quotes for a reason. ;)

i will say, however, that a friend just got the vibrant and the screen is brilliant. he decided to root, and has been thrilled since.

Is the GPS on the phone crap or is it the software making it crap? Because if I just root the vibrant and install custom roms, will that fix the GPS? Vibrant has the same CPU as the nexus S and that's all that really matters to me. I can do anything the nexus S can with the vibrant and maybe more lol.

its the hardware... samsung has crappy gps (see Moment and Galaxy S series) the software (either sprint telenav or google maps; they are the only 2 i have used) worked fine when it actually gets GPS signal....

BTW they both work FINE on my HTC Evo Shift :) :) :)

Hahaha nice. I had a samsung instinct and the gps worked fine when i had a signal other than that it was crap too.

I think I'm getting the vibrant:)

Thanks guys for all the help!

I thought about what to get and I was for sure vibrant... But then I look at the phone plans and for t-mobile the calling is unlimited for t-mobile to t-mobile. (she doesn't have t-mobile). I call my girlfriend alot and that won't work unless I got the 100$ /month plan....

ATT has unlimited -mobile-to-mobile and that's just what I need. The captivate is the only phone I like from ATT but I don't know if that's anybit like the captivate. People say the buttons aren't as bright and that may be a flaw... I dunno.

What should I do guys? Get my girlfriend to skype with me on the computer or get with att & the captivate?

Thanks.

P.S. I plan on installing a ROM.

I am not sure, but doesn't TMo also have the myfaves plan (unlimited calling to five numbers of your choice)?

Also, ATT is getting a ton of Android phones in this upcoming quarter. Their current selection, IMO, is pitiful (most likely due to their having the iPhone exclusivity for so long and deciding not to branch away from their cash cow). If I were you, I would wait (and I don't say wait too often) AND I would stay away from Samsung, unless you are ok with potentially never seein an update past what the handset is currently sitting on.

Skype for computer to computer is free - and you can videochat as well if you have a webcam set up right.

The Captivate and Fascinate are variation of the Samsung Galaxy S phone - as is the Vibrant, Epic 4G and Continuum. I'd be surprised if their users reported significant quality differences in their features - owners of each are WAY satisified (but yes, they do complain about not receiving updates and having some GPS issues). Installing your own rom will relieve you of those complaints, I should think.

Sprint has unlimited mobile to mobile for $80/month, if you get good coverage in your area, maybe the Epic is another option. It has a front facing camera, you may find that there are now emerging a number of apps for video chat between phones and computers now. (Some of the Samsung phones have that, some don't, I'll have to let others advise you on that.)

Hm.. Well my phone contract ends in 12 days so I was really having to get a new phone now:\ I could stick with sprint and root the evo 4g. People say it's not that good tho. I see you have it? Is it good? (Better than the vibrant/captivate you'd say?) IDK what to do:( Now you say there's going to be new android phones i don't know what to do lol. I don't want to be stuck with an outdated phone for 2 years.

Hm... If I did go with the captivate with att, what is bad about att? People say they suck but I don't quite understand why. If I send a text will it go through? Or will it not?

Also. Do you like your evo? Maybe I should stay with sprint because of the great calling.

I like my Evo very much. It's exactly the right phone for me. Speedy updates, plenty of developer support allowing me to add performance to those updates and the features that I like.

My personal experience with AT&T service and billing is one for the record books, so I might not be the best one to ask - I really hate them.

I'm planning to get the Vibrant however I am not a fan of contracts so I'm going with prepaid. It's a good deal in my opinion, $50 a month for unlimited talk/text and 100 MB of data or $70 for everything with 2GB of data. The only catch is that you have to buy the phone outright. Not a big deal to me though, since they go for around $250 on my local Craigslist and around $300 brand new, a bit higher on eBay. I would go with the Vibrant, T-Mobile's plans are much better.

I would stay away from anything samsung unless it's a nexus s. Which galaxy phones has a official froyo update which Google released in May of 2010.

But I thought if you install a custom rom it doesn't matter you can just install froyo yourself?

They all do, i9000, Vibrant and now Captivate. The Epic will be a little different for the physical keyboard support. The Continuum will also be a little different due to the banner display.

Just a matter of releasing them. But do note, if you go with Samsung, you will have to use Samsung Kies to update your phone, and Kies is only a PC thing. You will be in a disadvantage if you got a Mac, unless you want to upgrade via rooting or other means involving custom ROMs.

I kinda wish I knew what to do. My phone expired and if I don't get a new one soon it's going to start up again and want money from meh.

What should I do? I really want a android phone but I don't want to spent 80+ a month to keep it running. :\

Research on all the phone plans first. I think T-Mobile also has cheap Androids to match cheap data plans.

T-Mobile is on the verge of transitioning from the Vibrant to the Vibrant 4G (which appears to be using Froyo or Gingerbread), making the updates moot. But it may require a matching data plan which I don't suppose might be cheap. But it is HSPA+ and it is fast.

I think you missed the G2 for free limited offer for a time window, which ended on January 20. I'm not sure. If you choose T-Mobile for a carrier, you do have other good Androids for your alternative, like the G2 and the MyTouch 4G. Are you that set for a Samsung?

Having come from the Moment, and seeing how long it's taken the Epic users to get 2.2 (have they even got it yet?), I know I'm going to stay FAR away from Samsung from now on. But to each his own. I have to admit, the Vibrant and all the other Galaxy phone do have a beautiful screen... but I prefer a working GPS. ;)

I talked with Tmo today for a quote. Almost double what I pay Sprint right now and they don't have a phone that can standup to the Evo. Good luck with your switch.

I liked the galaxy phones because they had a 1ghz processor + hd video. They apparently had the fastest processor + gpu and even beat the htc evo 4g.

I just wanted a new phone that'd last 2 years for a contract and I was concerned about CPU speed because the faster, and being android, i could simply customize it and it'd easily last 2 years, you know? But maybe I'm just thinking the wrong way. I just wanted a durable phone that would last me two years. I hate early termination fee's and coming from sprint I finally get to have a real phone.

I just don't know what to do now. I figured samsung was the way to go since the captivate + vibrant + the other galaxy phones are so high rated.... Maybe it's just hype?

I'm so undecided. I've chosen not to go with verizon because it's too expensive. T-mobile I used to have a black berry and great service from them in 2008 but decided to get rid of a cell phone. Now I tried att and had a goPhone which litterally failed me. I sent texts that my recipients never received. So I figured maybe it was the phone? I couldn't trust it either so I completely left att, and went to sprint.

Now my 2 year contract with sprint is over and I've been dying to have a android phone ever since last month. Finally a phone I can actually do things with instead of being so limited.

Then I heard about the galaxy phones having the fastest cpu and whatnot. That's when I decided to call it there. I wanted a touch screen not a pull out like the G2 had. I dunno tho. I feel stupid wanting such a thing now, it's not even a big deal you know? I mean really... I have a computer. Typing on it right now.

When my senses finally come to my head, and I realize what I actually wanted, all I wanted was just a nice touch screen texting phone w/ swype that won't lag on me if I'm texting fast. A reasonable GPS so I can find my friends house at night when it's foggy. And a nice HD camcorder so I can record great times.

That's all I really wanted. I wanted to install a custom rom to get rid of any lag and fix the broken GPS or it's what I visualized. But now I don't know what to do. I don't want that new phone coming out to att, that'll have a dual core. That's not what I need lol. I don't plan on playing games or anything, just something fast that can handle the new roms for atleast 2 years till the contract ends.

Sorry for typing so much, just maybe thought you might have a better suggestion. Thanks.

The Captivate and the Vibrant will definitely last you. As of now, it appears the Vibrant now has an Android Froyo official upgrade in effect but that won't matter for people who prefer custom ROMs. The Galaxy S series are among the phones most convenient to ROMs.

And you are right, both phones have a lot of CPU power and memory to last and last.

The thing is, both the Captivate and the Vibrant are in the "sunset" period of their product cycles and new Galaxy S types are imminent. AT&T has already shown the new Samsung Infuse with the HSPA+ and 4.5" screen though it has not set a date of introduction. T-Mobile's launch of the Vibrant 4G is imminent. This has HSPA+ and Froyo out of the box. Next month, Samsung is about to show the new Galaxy S2 which might be dual core, but then you mentioned you don't care about that.

Another choice I would recommend is the Nexus S. Its a modified version of the Galaxy S and looks closely to the Vibrant but this time, the entire upkeep of the OS is Google's. This phone can assuredly have the latest updates from Google and currently has the latest version of Android. The Android 2.3 Gingerbread on the Nexus S definitely feels more responsive than the Android 2.1 Eclair on the Captivate. And even if all Galaxy S are made of plastic, including the Nexus S, the way, the plastic is built on the Nexus, it feels tougher than your ordinary Galaxy S and lacks body creaks.

The fact that all updates are going to be straight from Google itself, for me, puts the Nexus S, above all others. In fact in my opinion, there is no other reason to get any other kind of Galaxy S when you got the Nexus S. This is available for T-Mobile.

If you do plan to go with AT&T, I know people who swear by the Captivate with custom ROMs. Short of the Nexus S, I think the Captivate has the best body for any Galaxy S variant.
