Swype avail for Eris

My ONLY gripe so far (I love it overall) is that when typing in a contacts name, it doesn't automatically bring up their number...I'm sure its been covered, but it's annoying switching input methods just for that.
 
UMMM can someone do this for the moto droid version...I'm seriously lost without my swype and I can't find the correct version for the droid

yes, re-follow the directions i've posted above. your probably doing something wrong. LONG HOLD in the text box where you type after bring up the keyboard LONG HOLD in the text box and then select swype. if not go through the settings in text and have it set as swype instead of the stock qwerty keyboard. Just follow the directions above you will get it.

I did the tutorial on the phone, covers all that stuff and was very useful...after completing the tutorial, I was already used to swype. And just went to double check that I wasn't screwing up before with my issue...and I was, forget my problem, I solved it.

yeah, it's pretty neat. still using the stock oem board and qwerty keyboard though because for some reason i seem to be faster with it. once i switch to phone version 2.1 from 1.5 tonight or this weekend i'll prob. put swype back on and use it.

This too worried me, so I figured as long as I don't log into my bank account on my phone (they wouldn't get much anyway, lol) that I wasn't too concerned about it. I don't really care if they "swype" my texts to my wife asking her what I should pick up from the store on the way home, or when someone sends me a text asking me how to read the tag on 9" Ford differentials...

But, I do LOVE Swype, it's the coolest thing since air conditioning!
 
i think it's just to collect problems. it's like when you install AVG FREE anti-virus on your computer it has a Check with a box for allow avg to see known problems or virus's. It's just for there own good to better the program. I always un-check those boxes if i can.

Actually, if they do come out with something else, you could easily open the apk files up with winzip/winRAR, find the png files, optimize them (again) in photoshop, and remove the language files, remove the help files... and you've got a brand new, re-optimized Swype (just as was done in XDA already).

heh... but technically for the average user... its not easy and 1.16 will be the most used for awhile.

You're in luck. A friend at work had his Swype version expire, so I found him a new one for the Droid.

The website says this is version 1.25, which is the same as the beta.
 
I had the light version, and I don't notice much difference with the official beta. The non-swype tapping seems to work better on the beta version. Other than that, same thing to me really.

I had the official beta and the earlier leaked beta and this lite version is a great blending of the two. It's as polished as the official beta with the glowing keys when tapped and correct send/go/return moniker for the lower right key and blue type highlights. But as the person who posted the link of the lite version says, it's adjusted better for the Eris screen. It has the larger keys from the leaked version which I like better especially in portrait mode.

I think you are right. I hope the lite version never quits working.. I was going to return my Eris because of the keyboard but I'm going to keep it as longs as Swype works.

Swype’s primary business model is OEM licensing. As such, we are actively seeking partners who are interested in deploying Swype to help create better and more useful devices.

That definitely makes sense, but ... if they didn't plan to also offer a retail version it seems to me that they wouldn't have released an official public beta. Their doing that tells me that they plan to have a version available in the Android Market at some point.

I don't know if it is worth a whole lot, but this is what they said when they first released the keyboard. They released it on the Omnia II and it was a hit. The guys at XDA extracted it and began packaging it in ROMS for other WinMO phones. The Swype Devs made "official" noise about it, causing many forums to ban its inclusion in ROMS. The Swype Devs said at that time they had no intention of marketing it directly to the consumer, but would consider it in the future.

Then they began to develop it for Android. Now here is where I find it interesting. Their reaction to people using it on the android phones has been completely different. They put up an open beta. It seems unlikely that they would do this if they didn't intend to market it. It would cause a significant backlash for people to get used to using it then finding they wouldn't be able to get it when the beta expires unless they buy a new phone with it installed.

One of the things they said was the marketing was different for consumer versus manufacturer. I think this is valid. I personally think the instant demand for it with the WinMo phones, and now the obvious demand for it on android phones caused them to rethink their future business model.
 
I got a beta invitation and installed the swype beta. It worked for about a day, and I rebooted my phone to find a message that said something like this "The installed package is not for this phone. Swype will work with limited capability." That's not the exact message, but I don't remember it exactly. After that message, I would only be able to touch each key, just like the stock keyboard. I tried reinstalling, which worked until I rebooted again. Now, when I do a reinstall, it doesn't work at all. Btw, I'm running 2.1 if it makes a difference.
 
hmm I'm gonna give this lite version a try. I was happy with the leaked one whatever that was (maybe it was the lite one) but then installed the official beta and for some reason had a lot of trouble with using it and went back to the stock keyboard. I'll report back how it works in comparison to the beta.

That happened to me too, I deleted everything Swype related off my phone then went back to the website and downloaded the installer again. After reinstalling Swype I haven't had that problem again.

I noticed that too, but uninstalled the main program, then used the installer to re-install it. Still does that on every reboot.
