Swype beta just expired

There are long and very specific direction on the Swype beta site on how to uninstall the old and install the new beta.

Some have needed to use the Swype installer to remove old versions before using the same installer to install the new version.

Yes uninstall the app...root explorer--> mount R/W--> search swype--> Delete the one file that comes up...unless you still have the apk... then you might see two files. In any case it doesn't work if your here delete them both.

Yep, got it. Thanks for your help.

Know what? (rant warning! lol)...

I totally agree with you. Either release the app on the market or GTFO. People are getting tired of waiting. There's thousands (if not more) who will gladly pay upwards of $10-$20 (maybe more) for this app. It's that good, but it's time for Swype to release to the public and stop all this beta non-sense. If they are opening up the beta tomorrow as Tech Crunch indicates, then good for them and we will all rejoice.

It works and works very well. That is why so many of us are a little miffed at this point (even though I am a legal owner of the beta). Just release it on the market already so we can get money in your hands to keep developing for it!

So, if I'm reading these last few posts correctly, the users believe that the makers of Swype are huddled in a garage somewhere saying "Listen, we've got a product that thousands of people are willing to pay for. How 'bout we screw with 'em and just keep it in beta so that we never make any money from our work? Yay us!!"

Clearly, if was ready to be sold, it would be sold.

You do know there are ways of generating revenue other than selling an "app" to end users.

I would think the $$$ they are making dwarfs what they could get selling even a high demand app in the market.

I got the new version of swype (thank god) after mine expired the other night.

I hate having to reteach it some words when I upgrade... but at least it doesn't take too long to do.

One thing I've been wondering though. In the first version of swype I used, it had an edit screen (I think you tapped the symbol key two or three times). The screen had four directional arrows and some other useful keys I found amazingly helpful in certain apps. Is that screen just plain gone? Or am I just missing how to get back to it?

edit: oh and it looks like the linked articles above were right. just visited the swype beta site and signed up.

Swype from the Swype key to the Sym key to access the edit keyboard.

Yes, for those who have been wondering, you can definately get a legit copy of Swype for your phone, Swype seems to have a new Beta version 7625, and are opening it up to more Beta testers again. So, just go to their website
Swype | Text Input for Screens
and sign up. You should get an e-mail reply within a day with a link to how to install it.

I signed up yesterday and got a reply and installed it.

The installer should detect if you are using a wvga or hvga phone and download the appropriate version. If you get the message that you are not using an android phone, then you need to make sure you phone browser is identifying you as a mobile phone and not a desktop browser.

Since there is no way of theming the app without hacking the apk, I would "think" Swype would disagree.

Precisely. I doubt they'd care if you did it for your own use, but once it starts getting spread around it becomes warez. It doesn't matter that nobody paid money for it; it's Swype Inc's copyrighted intellectual property. Their legal team have already made contact with at least one other Android-related forum in relation to this, so for that reason direct links to the .apk are prohibited here on AF. That's all.... discussion is perfectly okay, just no links to the app.

I see why people are frustrated, particularly us Android users who are used to getting apps from the marketplace.

I've been reading the reading the Swype website and forums and can also see their point of view. The chap who created Swype is the same person that created T9 predictive texting. So, they are looking to follow that business model and sell the Swype product to manufactures to include on their handsets "pre-installed" like T9 is. My guess is that they may make more money that way. Also, Swype would not have to spend huge amount of resources and personnel supporting the app for all the different handsets. The support would be down to each handset manufacturer or network provider, who already have the right setup to offer support (or perhaps not, I hear you say...).

Anyway, that's just my guess!

Like others, I got in on the newly-opened beta yesterday. I had very difficult time installing the new beta version. I previously had the "other" version floating around and it worked great (yes, I uninstalled it). It really sucks when the other/pirated version can be installed in 2 min with zero issues, but the real version takes a good 10 min of frustration to get working.

The Swype servers must be overwhelmed today. Keep trying if it's giving you trouble.

I can't help but wonder if this is a hoax. I know it's not even remotely close to being April Fools day, but there is no mention of this on the Swype website and all they have to say about it on their forum is they are thinking about releasing it to the market. Just my thoughts.

Also, i never did get an answer to my question a few posts back (at least I don't think I did). Is a themed version (blue, red, etc) of Swype considered warez? What if we are legal registered users of the regular Swype, is downloading and installing a themed version still considered piracy?

Thanks,
Kratos
Not a Hoax, registered yesterday and rceived today an invitation to download the installer for downloading the automaticly detcted version for my Milstone.

Is anyone else having problems getting the new beta working? Mine will not work at all, it just traces then the sides blink and nothing is entered... I've been using it fine since the officle beta came out... Now all of a sudden this new beta will not work :(

I had to try 6 times right after I got my Swype beta e-mail before the Swype downloader actually gave me a version compatible with my phone. It took 2 tries after I switched to Froyo. IMHO, it's worth the PITA to keep trying, because the newest Swype version is even better than the last version.

I found one major annoyance with the new version though. When holding the delete key for the whole word deletion, it no longer recognizes periods as separators (like a space). So now you have to delete one letter at a time to edit a url, rather than being able to hold for it to delete say the .com, then google, and leave the http://www.

Don't know why they'd change that.
