Swype is BACK!!!

my version isnt working :( it says the version i have was intended for a different phone :(

mine is saying the same thing...gonna uninstall and reinstall a few times until it works...if it just won't work, then I'll go back to shapewriter until they can get swype fixed...

I got my email 5 minutes after registering but can't load the page to download on my phone...duhhh. they must be getting hammered with requests.

If the full release is a big enough improvement over the beta, I may actually end up trading in my beloved ShapeWriter. Swype's interface truly is nicer, but I'd bet anything SW is faster.

Faster how? I'd like to think I'm pretty friggin quick on the keyboard and I've yet to see Swype show any sign of being slow. I've tried Shapewriter myself and fail to see how it's any faster be it due to code execution or ease of use.

Due to (in my experience) various little things like its ability to pick up on double letters or the words it defaults do. ShapeWriter just always went faster with me, required fewer corrections and such. I could type "the bookkeeper needs to be good at skiing" and the only thing I might have to do is select "good". With Swype you're either looping on EVERY double letter or struggling to pick the words you want.

But its overall presentation (special characters and layout) are a lot better, so if Swype fixes its issues before SW does its own, then that'll tilt the scales!

I was a little worried about the beta expiring as Swype is a superb app. Tried the others but this for me is the best. The new beta is incredibly stable on my Hero. Anyway I sent an email asking about buying it, beta ending etc. Here is the reply

Great news

At this point, we have no intention of ending the beta and leaving our users without a way to use Swype. Our beta has an expiration date on for the sole purpose of making sure old versions don

I registered about 2 months ago. Completely forgot about it until the MyTouch vibrated ith the mail. Download without any issues the first time and installed.
This thing is badass!

Can anyone help me?

I had swype, then it stopped working. So I went to the website signed up for beta and got the swype installer. Tried it once said it was already installed. So I uninstalled the original swype and tried again. It downloaded, installed, and ask me if I wanted to enable it. So it brought me to the keyboard and language screen and I hit the check mark and enabled it. However, when ever I use something that requires the keyboard I get the original keyboard and not the swype one. I have restarted the phone after enabling it. I have the droid eris if that makes a difference.

Hold your finger down where you want to type and then an option will come up for input method, select swype.

Hopefully this is correct!

simple fix here.. go to any text entry box (i.e. send a text message.) long press the text entry field. you'll get prompted with a selection box for input method. tap input method and then swype

that's all there is to it...

I hope this is true. Then we can all have it. It should come preinstalled on all phones anyway.
Let your manufacturer know then. That's the approach that Swype is taking at this point.

I use shapewriter. Is this better? Just wondering.
Better is always subjective and it's even more so with keyboard apps. We can't tell you which you will prefer. You can read the comments above, FWIW. I prefer Swype. YMMV.

Got swype on my Desire and like it a lot. Problem is the vibrate function doesn't work, it's grayed out in the settings (but it's ticked) yet the vibrate for the stock keyboard works fine. Anyone know what's up with it?

no Idea.. it came defaulted to on with Swype for the Hero.. it's annoying...very annoying... so I turned it off.

for those having errors when installing or trying to use Swype.. try this (from the Swype FAQ)

Advanced: I receive one of the following errors when I try to install Swype:
  • Registration of the License Failed
  • Swype is already installed. Please uninstall Swype and try again.
  • Swype is configured for another device and will operate with limited functionality.
  • You do not have the necessary permissions to install Swype or
  • The ID of this of this phone does not match your registration at beta.swype.com

These errors are often shown when the Swype installer is terminated prematurely by the Android OS system activity manager as it tries to reclaim resources. Regardless of the cause, these steps should resolve the issue:

  • Uninstall both Swype and SwypeInstaller from your device - detailed directions here
  • Reboot your device
  • Close as many widgets from your desktop as possible
  • Download the SwypeInstaller
  • Use a task-manager to kill all non-essential running apps
(If you are not familiar with the task-manager, you can skip this, but you may see the error again)
  • Install and run the SwypeInstaller

it took 5 tries for me before it worked...I had errors that ranged from the version I had installed was configured for another device...to failure registering...to not having permission to install Swype (real funny since I'm rooted and have SU permissions)..

I'm just glad it worked.. I prefer swype over shapewriter..

ok...so i just uninstalled the swype app alone and it worked. only once. im guessing everyone's experience will vary

I could type "the bookkeeper needs to be good at skiing" and the only thing I might have to do is select "good". With Swype you're either looping on EVERY double letter or struggling to pick the words you want.

Just thought I'd try this with Swype and although a few of the words needed to give some suggestions the word I wanted was always the first one, so no need to select you can just keep on writing.

I gave it a try on both swype and shapewritter.. shapewritter did get skiing where on swype I had to select it.. however, swype does have the ability to be adjusted for speed vs accuracy... also for me it's the look and feel of swype that I prefer over shapewritter (I have both installed and since shapewritter is going to be pulled from the market soon I'll keep both installed :D)

as far as which is better... Swype or Shapewritter??? they're both great keyboard replacements.. They both perform about the same.. they're both faster than typing... it all comes down to personal preference

I installed it yesterday. I had a few issues with registering due to the site getting hammered, but nothing compared to trying to preorder an iPhone or an EVO. Also got my download email within seconds of registering. I am loving it so far. It's amazing how much faster typing is now. May try and get this for my dad and his EVO, but odds are the beta will be shut down before then...

I just applied and got my email in about 30 seconds, have it installed and am playing with it. Never used Swype before but so far am loving it! TY for the link and info!!!!
