Swype Tips & Tricks

Hit the menu button then the microphone button is just above and to the right of the menu key. That is where it is on mine, but I am using Handcent keyboard with swype.

That Speak / Microphone option is only there because it's a feature of the Handcent SMS app. If you go into a different app, such as the native Mail app, if you are using Swype, there is no speak / mic option.

Hopefully someone will come up w/ a version of Swype that also exposes the Speak feature.

Yup...I just got Handcent and that fixes the problem in my text messages but I still don't have Voice Text in other programs.

I'd rather have Swype without voice text than to go back to that regular keyboard!

Has anybody had any luck using Swype to draw emoticons?

I added ":)" by typing it, highlighting it, and then hitting the Swype key, but the best I can get is ":)" appearing as an option in the pop-up list. Swype seems determined that "jp" is a possibility. I've tried deleting "jp" from the Swype dictionary, but it's not there.

Minor I know, but figured it couldn't hurt to ask. :)

you can't reply by voice yet, but when you are prompted at the quick sms screen, you can click the microphone there and use voice to text..... I love this swype thing... you must give it a few days and then you'll always use it.... believe me

I have found it most difficult to type in emails and passwords. I don't know if there is a good solution for the password. It doesnt seem to get added to the dictionary, but I probably dont want it in there anyways. As for emails, it is tough because of the @ symbol. I wish I could swype the whole thing or have it added to the dictionary but it doesnt seem to work.

Another annoyance is when I try to correct something. Maybe my finger is too big, but it usually takes several tries for me to get the cursor exactly where I want it. Sure I can use the optical track pad but that can be slow. I would prefer having something like the zoom in / magnify glass feature that iphones have.

Otherwise, its been great

type in the email by hitting each letter individually, then highlight the whole email and press the swype key at the bottom left. Now swype the email. It should work.

Trying moving the swype settings more towards accuracy, that shoud help

Home Screen--> Menu--> Settings--> Launguage & Keyboard--> Swype settings--> Speed vs. Accuracy

The phone is already fast enough to keep up with swype so I moved mine about 3/4 towards accuracy and it does fine.

Let me know if that helps

Since I use this swype thing, I have found the only way to speak into the navigation (rather than type, if I'm driving) is hold the end point location, switch to the normal imput method, and then speak.

Is there a better way? Has to be....

Swype is great, but the one thing they absolutely HAVE TO DO is add an auto-correct dictionary like the Blackberry. If we could Swype "Il" and have it auto correct to "I'll" or "idk" auto correct to "i don't know," I'd love this app. I also have a few instances where the auto spacing after words doesn't work. But it seems like the people at Swype are listening to our comments and making improvements, which is fantastic.

It sems that my MMS threads are taking about 2 seconds longer to open up when I installed Swype. Anyone else have this issue?

i love swype but I find small words like 'or' and such give me a heck of a time. its amazing for long words like superficial or incredible.

been almost 2 weeks since i have had swype and i still think im pretty slow. still alot of errors because of small words mostly

If you run through the tutorial it specifically advises you to avoid direct connects between two letters when doing an intentional 2 letter word. This will avoid the errors you are seeing. .... It does take a little learning, but once you get used to it it is not hard to have it be correct on the first try.

Besides that, when you enter a short word, it often displays it as the second choice in the swype dictionary so its easy enough to click and continue.

My only annoyance is that on my RAZR the "W" key is covered by the little "correction pentagon" for a few too many seconds and makes it damn near impossible to start a sentence with "W" in it.

Does anyone have a resolution for this?
