Sync contacts - problem & solution

Bob-B

Newbie
When I got the Dinc2, no problem to sync my Gmail contacts with the phone, using the stock HTC People app. But when I added new contacts from the phone, the new contacts wouldn't sync with Gmail, although changes in existing contacts were reflected in Gmail. It turns out that when making a new contact, on the second line there is a drop down list called contact type, which defaults to phone. Any contact entered as phone contact type won't sync with Gmail, but if I drop down the contact type and choose Google, it will sync just fine.

Question - does anyone know how to change the default contact type for all new contacts?

I had a similar problem, but with the facebook app also. I have all my contacts from facebook synced up to my "people" list, but I cannot get them to link up the names. The spelling and everything is the same, but they just won't link. Any help is appreciated.

Here's what I found. Under Menu, View, if I remove Phone and SIM, and leave Google as the only contacts to view, adding a new contact defaults to Google :).

And if you now have a mix of Google and Phone contacts just export your contacts to the SD card. Delete all you contacts from the phone. Then import the contact from the SD card as Google contacts. Now they'll all be Google contacts. After I did this my contact sync up good.

I tried that too and I immediately got a popup asking which contacts to export, google, phone or sim. Which do I export?

did that and ...had 500 contacts on phone contacts after importing contact from sd card and 12...........didn't work for me.

Eventually did a hard reset...lost tons of info BUT...I now have my gmail contacts syncing with my phone. Have to remember..."it's just a phone and all I want to do is make clear phone calls with ez contact search"

C'mon IPONE 5 and the ICloud

The steps I posted definitely work. After backing up my contacts to SD and then restoring them as Google contacts I verified the sync. I went onto the GMail site and added a bogus contact. An hour later I checked my phone and it was there. I then removed the contact from my phone. An hour later I check the GMail website and it was gone.

Looking at the date showing under accounts and sync, it doesn't look like the phone is updating this date. But, I do no the contact are getting synced up.
