Help Sync contacts to google account problem

I bought HTC Desire HD several days ago and this is the first android phone for me. The problem, I'm currently having is that I can't sync my phone contacts to my google account properly. Actually there are several issues I would like to figure out...

First I have imported all my contacts from the sim card and now I see all of them twice in the contact list (e.i. when I press the phone button from the home screen). Is there a way to get rid of these duplicate entries and only show phone contact?

Second, I wonder if there is a way to copy all my contacts from phone to my google account? I have added my google account from settings and checked all the checkboxes inside synchronization but still I can't see any contact in my google account. I tried to sync manually several times, but still no contacts are can be see in google account.

So, long story short, I want to sync all contacts from my phone to my google account and get rid of these duplicate entries.

Any ideas?

Hi Julien, welcome to AF! :)

You need to import the contacts to Google manually initially, once done, you'll have the option to save contacts to Google each time you add one. It's a pretty straightforard process:

1. Disconnect the phone from the PC
2. Open The Phone Book
3. Hit Menu
4. Import/Export
5. Export to SD
6. Select PHONE or SIM account (dependant on where you store your numbers)
7. Wait for the .vcf file to be created (it should be created on the root of the SD Card, not in any folders).
8. Connect the phone to the PC as a Disk Drive
9. Copy the .vcf file you just created on to the desktop of your PC.
10. Unmount/Disconnect the phone from the PC
11. Log into the gmail account associated with the phone in your browser
12. Hit Contacts (in the top left hand side of the page)
13. More Actions
14. Import
15. Select the file you've just copied to your PC, let it upload
16. Click Contacts again, you should see the contacts from your phone listed.
17. Perform a Sync on your phone, it will download the contacts to your phone again so you'll end up with a few duplicates, but after your phone sorts itself out, then they'll link themselves.

If you want to remove duplicates, open the phonebook, hit menu, view, then uncheck everything apart from Google Contacts and the duplicates will still be there, just invisible.
