synching gmail contacts - more queries

I appreciate that there have been a lot of threads on this issue but I have 2 additional queries which I have not seen noted before. Firstly, why when I have set up my GMail contacts on my computer into 8 groups do only 4 groups appear on my phone after synching? Secondly, is there anyway that the Google contacts can be rearranged so that the surname comes first - this can be done for phone contacts but does not appear possible for Google contacts?

Can't help with the second question, but I've found after searching the default contact groups in goolge (Family, Friends, and Work I think they are called) do not appear to sync with the phone.

If you used them like me in gmail, I had to create 3 new groups and name them slightly different (ie Coworkers) and copied the members to the new groups. These groups then synced fine with the phone.
