Help Syncing S3 and PC

Elec354

Lurker
Hi everyone. I need help connecting my S3 to my PC. I connect it through a USB cable, and then nothing on either end...my phone is up to date, I've tried restarting it...it just charges my phone and that's it.

I love this phone, but this should be so much simpler than it seems to be....ridiculous!

Thank you for the help :)

Hello and welcome Elec354 :)
Are you using the usb cord that came with the device?
Did it connect before and all of a sudden it does not connect?

A couple things to try include, a different usb cord, a different usb port, remove then reinstall the drivers, reboot the computer. :)
Do you have another computer to see if that one can see the device?

I am using a mini usb to usb cable - it did not come with the phone. If my phone is being charged, could changing the cable really help? I've tested it on a MAC but it never ended up working, though I did get further than where I am now...literally nothing happens when I connect my phone. What setting do I need to change on my phone?

Mike is right: the most frequent problem is a dodgy USB cable. The fact the phone still charges doesn't necessarily mean it's connecting properly.

If that isn't the issue, you could check that the phone is in MTP mode:

Settings .. Storage .. Menu .. USB computer connection

Then tick MTP.

Failing that, it could be drivers:

- disconnect the phone from the computer
- uninstall ALL phone related sofware and drivers from the computer
- restart the computer
- restart the phone

Re-install Kies - do NOT connect the phone until prompted.

Also, do NOT disconnect the phone until ALL drivers have successfully installed

I go to settings....storage...and then all I see is applications, pictures, videos, audio, downloads, cached data, misc files, available space...and then SD card data specs.

There should be a menu (3 vertical dots) button, probably in the top right corner: you need to tap that to get the USB computer connection option

I see nothing of the kind...though I am aware of the menu button you're talking about, there is no menu button anywhere...

Hey there Elec!
I moved your thread to the S3 forum here;)

Well, on the S3, when connected to the computer, you should be able to pull the notification bar down, and choose the options for MTP or PTP.
But, seeing as tho your computer will not recognize the device, you won't have those options.

I would suggest the options that Siempre suggested to get the computer to "see" the device :)

- disconnect the phone from the computer
- uninstall ALL phone related sofware and drivers from the computer

I wish the OP good luck. I've tried getting my PC to recongnize my S3 with no success (this all started after upgrading to 4.3). I've tried everything. Well, I've not yet sacrificed any chickens, but I'd give that a shot if it would help. I've done the cable thing, the driver thing (even older ones), the Kies thing, the booting into safe mode thing, I've tried other PCs, hooking the USB cable up with the screen on and off, hooking the cable up with the phone on and off. I've trolled every Andriod forum available and nada. Having said that... actually my PC does recognize my phone 'cause I can see it in Device Manager. It's Windows Explorer that won't recongize it. I forget off the top of my head who it was, but a really helpful member of this forum tried in vain the help, but even he had to give up. Yes, I've wiped the phone and started from scratch. All that did was use up a bunch of bandwidth putting all my apps back on the phone.

If you figure out something I've not yet tried... I'd be happy to give it a shot 'cause I'd like to root my phone. I'm tempted to give AirDriod (or similar app) a try, but I've not found anyone who's used one of those apps to root. If that'd work, I'd give it a try but I don't want to brick my phone in the process.

BTW... there's tons of posts on the net about this problem. Many people, like me, have yet to find a solution.

Good luck...

Can't help the OP..but I can help you!

You don't need 'Airdroid' to root your phone, Airdroid is a file transfer app and IMHO it is the best out there.

To root you need 'Odin' installed on your pc; but yes you will need drivers; some people use Kies for that; I just pulled them from ADB; but the windows generic drivers should work.

If you need advice rooting your phone have a look at the root forums on here for advice.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've not yet tried Odin. Will interesting to see if it'll see my phone, 'cause Kies can't find it.

Wow. Yeah, I was simply using the wrong cable...silly me. Thanks all.

I am trying to listen to and back up about 600 voice recordings. Now I have them on my computer but I need to convert .3ga to .mp3, and simply changing the file extension does not truly convert the file.

Does anybody have experience with and know of the best way to go about it? Thanks so much!

In the OPs case, it sounds like he's using a charging only cable and not a data cable

I was thinking the same thing after I read the Op, Funky. I just commented in another thread about the difference in cables and that just because it will charge a phone doesn't necessarily mean it will transfer data. It all depends on the pin set. :D

They have free converters available if you don't already have the software. Just search a little with Google.

I have the full Roxio 2012 and it has the ability to convert audio and video files to different formats. Nero and others can also do this. It's possible you may already have the software you need if you have Rovio, Nero, etc. I'm not talking about the simple burn software either just to clarify that. It's usually the full suites that contain those extra conversion utilities.
