system apps removal

I was digging through the apps stored in /system, and noticed "googleapps.apk". Anyone know what exactly that's for, and can it be removed?

also, can "flickr", "navigator", "talk", "voice dialer", "voice recorder", and "voice search" be removed as well? I'm guessing yes, but just want to confirm

also, does removing the "gmail" app (not the "mail" app) ruin email pulling? I'm thinking it does since I haven't received an email on my phone since I removed it, but want to be sure.

In which case, can someone post the gmail apk for me? lol

If you are unsure of the consequences of removing an app file you can shell into the /system/app/ directory and add a .bak extension instead with the mv command. Take your googleapps.apk file for example. Shell into the directory and enter the following at the # prompt:

Code:
mv googleapps.apk googleappsapk.bak

If there's an .odex file:

mv googleapps.odex googleappsodex.bak

If everything works out you can rm the .bak files but if things don't you can just shell back into the directory and mv everything back to the original extensions.

awesome, thanks for this...I'll have to give it a try

Removing the files (sprint apps) with root explorer is just the same as hooking the phone to your computer and removing them with the cmd screen right?

That's typically how I remove them when trying a new ROM (with root explorer).

K, cool.

I am staying low on eternal memory so just wanted to make sure when I erased something with root explorer that it was just the same...a few things I erased didn't seem to give me any memory back =(
