Root System Update Failure

Last night I was offered a system update so I tried to install it. It started off ok then, when the green line was about a quarter of the way along, it stopped and the display showed a picture of a phone with a red triangle.

I gave it 4 hours then realised it was stuck so I took the battery out although the instructions said not to. Luckily the phone booted up fine. But I keep being offered the update and have tried to install it twice more with the same result.

Could this be because the phone is rooted?

If I can't install the update, does anyone know a way to stop the update being offered please?
 
It's not necessarily because you're rooted, but because of your unlocked bootloader and custom recovery.

To stop notifications, unchecked the option under System > About > System Updates.

Thanks for that. I presume I can't relock it to get the update?
 
Sure you can. The command is

fastboot oem lock
The caveat is that you'll also have too find and flash the stock recovery for the update to run. You can find the stock recovery in the ROM.zip of any Wildfire S RUU.

Here's a detailed description plagiarized from another one of my posts :D

1. Download the correct RUU for your device from Football's Shipped Marvel ROM Collection. You'll need this to get the stock recovery.img.

2. Charge the battery above 50% or for at least one hour. If the battery dies during the flashing process, you could hard brick the phone!

3. Run the RUU until the wizard comes up. While the RUU wizard is open, find the temporary folder it created. (Open Explorer in Windows and type %temp% in the navigation bar.) There will be two folders with long encrypted names. In one of them you will find ROM.zip. Open it with 7zip and extract recovery.img or recovery_signed.img. Put it in the location were you've installed Android SDK tools. This is the stock HTC Recovery and it is needed to run the update.

4. Boot the phone into bootloader (power off, hold down volume and press power) and highlight FASTBOOT/B] using the volume rocker and pressing power. Then connect the USB cable. You should see FASTBOOT USB.

5. Open a command prompt in Windows and navigate to the folder where you installed Android SDK tools. Flash the stock recovery extracted in step 3 above using the following command:

6. Relock the bootloader using the following command:

It's new status will be *** RELOCKED ***.

7. Re-boot the phone and let it run the update.

Once the update is done you'll have unlock the bootloader again using the token you already have from the first time, re-flash CWM Recovery and re-root. All this will be 10x easier than the first time.
 
Thank you CafeKampuchia. I had a look but I'm not sure how to tell which RUU I should be using any ideas please?

I've also been looking round to try to learn everything I can about installing a custom ROM but I want to do it right without risking problems and I can't decide whether to go down that route, to persevere with re-locking it and updating, or to stay as I am.

Do you know if there is a straightforward guide to installing a custom ROM anywhere please?

Thank you and sorry to keep asking you questions but, as you can probably tell, I'm quite new to this.

My phone is a Wildfire S A510e (Marvel?) purchased Sim-free from Amazon. My network is JT Global in the Channel Islands off the coast of England.

In the Index of recoveries I guess I'm supposed to download "recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.8-marvel.img - 29-Jan-2012 01:39 - 4601856" but I have installed CWM Recovery from Google Play and made 2 backups with it, one from the bootloader and one from CWM Recovery's menu. Is that the same thing please?t

Edit: I just noticed that my current Rom Manager is v: 5.0.0.7.

Having done a factory reset, I'll have to reinstall all my apps including Rom Manager would I be unable to restore the backup should everything go belly-up.

I don't know how to wipe the cache partition and wipe dalvik cache (under Advanced).

Sorry if all this is covered in your rooting guide thread but it is quite long now.

Yes, you'll have to reinstall apps. But use Titanium Backup to backup and restore them including their user data (game scores, settings, etc.).

Yes, you can use your Nandroid backup.

If you use CWM Recovery by boot in into hboot and selecting Recovery, you'll see the option for Advanced.
 
Thank you, that has given me the confidence to give it a try. Just one more question though (I hope) do I just reinstall Titanium Backup and will it just pick up the backups from the SD card? sorry if that's an obvious question.

Hi CafeKampuchia, I'm back after trying a custom Rom and not liking it. I have restored my backup and have it running as it was before. So now I would like to relock the bootloader and install the update. I've looked through the list of RUUs from your link. Please can you confirm that I should download the one with the nearest number to my phone's software number and Baseband version.

In the list is "RUU_Marvel_S_HTC_Europe_2.13.401.3_Radio_47.23c.35.3037_7.54.39.28M". My software number is 2.13.401.3 and the baseband version is "47.23c.35.3037H_7.54.39.28M. Does the extra H and M make a difference?

Also do I need to flash the stock recovery if I already have it loaded from restoring my backup?
