Help System update issue

I'm totally new to this forum so I apoligize if this thread has been put in a wrong place.

I got my HTC Desire last fall, it was used by a friend of mine but has worked totally fine. When I try doing the System Update it downloads just fine, and when I want to install it, it starts shutting down. After a few second the phone is turned off, and after that it starts again. Now, it seems to freeze at the screen which comes up every time I start the phone; the white background with the green htc letters on. It has been stuck there for a while now, and I have tried several times to turn it off but it doesn't respond to any of the buttons, so I have ended up removing and inserting the battery. What am I doing wrong? How do I solve this?

All help is appreciated.

Could just be a bad flash to be honest.
Go to shipped ROMs and download the 2.3RUU. It will delete everything though

this is same problem im having. im trying to update it but it crashes everytime and gets stuck on the htc logo. take battery out and it comes back on after power up. been over to shipped roms but have no idea which rom i need. my phone is htc desire android 2.2 build 2.25.771.1 software same as build. my phone is locked to three network.

That's a 3 branded software version number (I googled it :)).

If you get really stuck there is a H3G ruu with that software version near the bottom of the page at shipped-roms. Remember that an RUU wipes the phone, so back up anything important before using one.
