Help System update with htc incredible S help!!!

I recently did a system update on my phone and now I can't access my messages. It says please wait and it has been like that for an hour now. everything else works just not my messages. will this fix itself? I don't want to reboot my phone because I haven't backed up anything please help!!!

if you close everything down on your phone, then power off, and turn it back on, it may fix, but there is a very low chance of loosing unsaved stuff. or you could close everything down, back up your phone to a cpu / sd card, remove the cord / sd card, then reboot.
