Root System update

I've happened to notice ad blocking apps no longer show in the play store after this update. Wtf.

Google banned all ad blocking apps and is threatening to ban users who use it. there's an article somewhere about it

the user ban part may be incorrect, but the ad block apps do violate google's terms

Argh. Yeah I had to flash an adaway zip I made a while back.

So are they gonna ban my adblock extensions now too I suppose?

I could see them pulling Chrome extensions. After all, Google is an ad company. They have to protect their own interests. Nothing will stop you from using third-party software that affects every web browser though ;)

If Google bans adblock for Chrome on PC/MAC/Nix, users will move to Firefox, at least this one will. The situation is different on Android as the add blocking is done in the host file and not with a browser extension. There really is no easy way to switch away.

Will the Connection Optimizer take up some RAM leaving it checked? Also, will it turn on my WiFi randomly when I have it off? I'm just wondering if it's actually useful as I'm pretty good at changing connections on my own.

It's easy to block adds at the hosts level on a pc as well. I use peerguardian on Linux.

I believe it's available on Winblows as well.

And Firefox Android has adblock extension just like the pc version.

Can we not just flash the Ramjet zip through the bootloader off the sd card? Or is all the talk of RUU'ing for people wanting to go back and get the full update instead of just what Ramjet pulled out?

The reason I started bringing up doing a full RUU and full OTA update is because even though Ramjet's file seems to contain a number of the updates it was not updating the software version number on my phone as well as not updating some of the apps like the stock browser.

I don't care about hboot because I just run a stock rom that is rooted/s-off so I just went back to RUU and get the full OTA update. Plus it doesn't hurt to clear out old apps and settings every once in a while.

That isn't to knock anyone's work here, it is just that with my setup it takes about an hour to be back to 100% where I was before completely set up, so it isn't a big deal to me. To someone with a ton of customization they may want to simply PG86 the files into place without RUU'ing.

There's also a thread here with an updated hosts file if you prefer to do things manually. I don't know how Google could detect or block that and if they did some privacy issues would surely be raised.

What amazes me is that Google would take this kind of action when you need root to use the apps and update the hosts file. My understanding is that it's a relatively small percentage of Android users that root, but it may be more that Google and the developers that depend on advertising for income just don't want that type of app visible in the Play Store.

It is hard to find info on it because there are so many different things out there named "connection optimizer".

What I saw it doing was turning on wifi and 4g periodically and it looks for a known wifi connection or 4g connection. If there is one it will switch over to use it, if not it turns wifi/4g off again until the next cycle.

It doesn't do much for you or me except use battery, but it helps Sprint by getting people off their 3g network and saves some bandwidth.

It is easy to turn off/on though, just go into SETTINGS > MOBILE NETWORK > AUTOMATIC CONNECTIONS > and then toggle it off/on.

I uninstalled connection optimizer.
My understanding is that you can also disable it without completely uninstalling it but I haven't played with it yet since Sprint Evo 3D users haven't received the update.

Edit: It looks like jaxmoto already gave the instructions to do that above.

Ok I got you guys Stock latest rooted for anyone who prefers stock
Thanks.

I know it sounds strange but can you post an unrooted version as well?

For some reason unlimited.io wants an unrooted stock ROM for the wire trick with the latest release of JuopunutBear. They actually specify the RUU but flashing the stock unrooted ROM and recovery may be a workaround for users that cannot flash the RUU.

simple as pie. will it work for that though? guess we'll find out

speaking of that. I've done the wire-trick for a few phones on a windows 8 x64 machine ;) so it's possible
